What you need to move

You need at least three things. First and foremost is money. You shouldn't come here empty-handed. You need the resources to hire at least three or four employees, otherwise the company will grow too slowly. The salary of local employees is approximately 70-100 thousand dollars per year. Second, you need a serious background, work experience in Russia and a pool of your own specialists with whom you can work. Third, you need to be able to take risks.

How to get a visa

My path is the classic legal option. I came to the United States on a tourist visa, registered a company here, and then transferred myself from my Russian company to an American one. This is called a multinational executive transfer. This can be done provided that you borrow leadership position in a Russian company for at least three years.

One more condition - your first company cannot consist of two or three people, under you there must be a structure of department heads, who must also have subordinates. There is another legal option - to try to get an H1B work visa, but there is a very large competition for it now. Once a year on April 1, a pool of free work visas opens, usually several thousand, and they are instantly sorted out by large companies. Microsoft, Google, Yahoo and other giants have special visa incentives for their employees, so there are very few left for ordinary people. For example, in 2013 all visas were processed in less than 24 hours.

How to open and close a business

Whether you are a US citizen or not, you will not notice much difference in the procedure for starting a business. The only feature is that it will cost you a little more. For a US citizen, it costs about $ 150, and for a Russian - about $ 500-600. The difference in cost is due to the fact that you will be required to pay for the services of a legal representative. Even if you are not going to sue, you must have some legal address, to which the government or the tax office can send you documents. In this case, Americans simply indicate their home address, while foreigners need a representative: no one will send you documents to a Russian address.

In general, starting a business in the United States is much easier and cheaper than in Russia. There is very little paperwork to do, and in two or three days, your signed documents will be returned with a state seal. If you want to make any changes to the company's charter, for example, to change the director, you do not need to notify anyone about this.

But with the closure of a business, there are no fewer problems here than in Russia. Firstly, the procedure itself costs about $ 800, and secondly, you pay the company that helps you with the closure - this is another $ 2 thousand. Before closing, there is a careful check of the state of affairs of the company: there should be no debts left, all reports should be submitted, none of the partners and clients should have any claims against you.

What form of company to choose

The cheapest option is to register a Limited Liability Company (LLC), but if you plan to sell the company in the future, it is better to do Incorporation (Inc.), an analogue of our OJSC. Inc. there is another advantage. New company can attract good employees by offering them a small stake in the business. You can say, "You will have a salary 30% lower, but when you join the company, you will receive 2% of the shares." So, on the one hand, you save on salaries, on the other hand, you motivate employees to develop the company. This is a very common practice in the United States. There is one more legal form - Sole Proprietorship, an analogue of our sole proprietorship, but this option is not suitable for non-residents of the state, as you will be considered not reliable enough.

In principle, it is not difficult to obtain resident status, you just need to live in one place for a year. But whether it is worth doing is a question. If you become a California resident, for example, you must pay taxes on whatever you earn in a year in California. If you have a business in Russia, taxes from it will also go to the California budget, and this is not very profitable, because Russian taxes are much lower than American ones. I know many Russian entrepreneurs who, having lived in the United States for ten years, have not yet officially recognized themselves as residents.

Which state to register in

I often hear that IT companies are advised to register in Delaware, which is famous for its tax incentives. However, nowadays there is a rather unpleasant impression of such companies. Local means a lot to Americans, they like to support local companies.

Delaware company owners are seen as greedy, acting against the interests of the local community. Because of this, other companies may refuse to cooperate with you. You will save 10-20% on taxes, but you will lose clients. My business is registered in California because most of our large client companies operate here. Corporations usually require your business to comply with the laws of the state in which they are incorporated. If your company is located elsewhere, they will require you to open a representative office in their state.

How to pay taxes

I am both an employer and an employee in my company, so I see the tax system on both sides. From an employer's point of view, the tax rate here is crazy. Income tax reaches 30-40%. At the same time, paying taxes in the States is easier, more transparent and more pleasant. The accounting company that serves us is much cheaper than a similar Russian one. The fact is that they submit a simple accounting report only once a year.

The situation with the taxation of employees is interesting. Each employee takes care of his own taxes, at the end of the year he submits a declaration in which he indicates all his income. If he accidentally overpays, the tax returns him the money. A progressive tax applies here: the more you earn, the more taxes you pay. Therefore, many are trying to adhere to a certain mark.

For example, if you receive 70 thousand dollars, then you pay 15%, and if more, then already 20% - and many do not dare to receive more than 70 thousand dollars for a long time. In the United States, it is customary to talk about how much you earn in a year, not a month, and always indicate the amount before tax. In Russia, taxes for employees are always the same, you pay 13% and you always know how much you will get clean. Here, the tax rate strongly depends on various conditions, for example, whether you are married, whether you are the head of the family, how many children you have. The tax ranges from 10 to 40%!

How to search for employees

In my company, developers work from Russia and Belarus, and in the USA - salespeople, account managers, designers and project managers. The IT labor market in the two countries is very different. In Russia, recruiters hunt for programmers, none of them are looking for a job for three months, because the demand for them is very high. The average age of IT employees in Russia is 30 years, and the companies themselves are very young.

In the USA, it is different: here the supply on the labor market exceeds demand, people are very responsible and choose a future company for a long time. During interviews, applicants will find out all the details of future employment: what kind of insurance is provided, what holidays are considered days off, what bonuses they are entitled to. It is customary here to hold on to work - if you need to do something, they will not sleep at night, but they will. However, personal relationships between employees are not encouraged here. For example, I cannot ask one of my employees to give me a lift at the airport - there is a taxi! If someone notices that another employee is performing poorly, they will definitely tell the boss about it. In Russia it is considered snitching, but here it is considered work ethic. Interestingly, in the United States there is no standardized vacation, the company itself determines the possible rest time, and any vacation will always be at the expense of the employee.

How to work with clients

American companies are usually afraid to work with foreign ones. They believe that as soon as they give something abroad, they lose it. If they cannot come to the office, call the executing company during normal business hours, they feel uncomfortable. Due to the growing tension between Russia and the United States, we try to remind as little as possible that we are from Russia. It's impossible to talk about Belarus at all: the Americans believe that a dictator lives in this country and that one cannot deal with it.

It was only after moving to the USA that I realized what real customer focus is. Here the client is always right, and everyone is trying to pay as much attention as possible to the service part of the company - how we work at the stage of acquiring a client, at the stage of order execution and, most importantly, what happens after the completion of the project. Everyone tries to maintain a relationship with the client in order to receive the next order from him.

Going to court in the United States is more a positive experience than a negative one. Once one of our clients refused to pay for the work performed, and we filed a lawsuit. Firstly, it was amazing for me that, not being a US citizen, I can safely sue a US citizen. Secondly, I was pleasantly surprised by the timing of our request. It took two hours to submit the application, after a month and a half we received a summons, the proceedings themselves took twenty minutes, as a result of which the client agreed to pay us. We got our money back immediately. In Taganrog, this process would have lasted for two years and, perhaps, would not have led to anything.

The business plan with which I came to the United States collapsed very quickly. I planned to spend 250 thousand dollars and reach a payback in six months, but I did not foresee some things. Firstly, there are very expensive employees, secondly, the taxes are terrible, and thirdly, only long-term office rentals. When you just arrive here, landlords do not trust you, so they demand an advance payment for a long time.

I managed to agree on payment for a year, and I was told that this is amazing, because usually the minimum prepayment period is two to three years! Another drawback that I did not foresee is the time difference between the three offices. Eleven hours is a lot. I had to change my work schedule a lot so that I had intersections with all employees. As a result, I work very often at night.

Some banks offer the option of remote account opening, but we do not recommend using it. Too much hassle. Three banks refused him without explanation. He turned to us to understand the situation. Everything turned out to be very simple. Banks simply doubted the legality of the company's funds. But the client can provide evidence by himself. When we collected reports from the tax office for the last few years, the bank opened an account without any problems.

In Florida, the exam is more difficult and has several stages. The exam is common for cosmetologists, hairdressers and manicure specialists, so it is much more difficult to take it.

The girl had to additionally study the basics of hairdressing and manicure in order to take the test in Florida. Also, the procedure for confirming the license is different in the states, but we instructed the cosmetologist in detail, so everything went quickly and without problems.
