This will be checked at an interview using various psychological tests, questions, and playing out possible situations. So, get ready for the interview properly - it is there that you will be offered tests that will reveal as much as possible whether you meet the requirements for flight attendants or is it better to consider another profession.

Requirements for flight attendants can be divided into two main blocks:

  1. Requirements of a mental (mental) nature: development, education, human qualities and skills, etc.
  2. Physiological requirements: age, health, physical data, etc.

Development, education, human qualities and skills

There are many countries and airlines in the world, and each has its own characteristics and principles, according to which airline recruiters select, which they pay special attention to. If you need to find out what are the requirements for flight attendants in any particular airline, then the best reference is the official website of the airline. And also do not be lazy to study at least short history countries of origin of the airline, local culture, specific information, etc. In the SkyJob course, we consider in detail and analyze the requirements of airlines, where a Ukrainian can become a flight attendant, identify the differences. After studying with our specialists - experienced stewardesses who have visited many places in the world and talked with representatives of different airlines, you will know for sure what it takes to become a flight attendant in one or another airline, their requirements.

If you meet all the requirements for the physiological part of block 2, then in order for you to understand how to become a flight attendant and what to do to become a flight attendant in terms of working on yourself, we will briefly describe in this article the basic requirements for mental (mental) flight attendants. parts that are almost the same on all airlines, and also mention some differences for example. We talk in more detail about these requirements in the theoretical part of our training, and we consolidate and give recommendations on how to approach these requirements in the practical part of the lessons.

So, one of the most important requirements is English proficiency. Note that it doesn't have to be perfect. There is enough for Ukrainian airlines and the middle level. For foreign, preferably higher. But, if you show yourself at the interview as the recruiters like: you behave correctly at all stages, answer the questions correctly, work well in team group games and have the correct appearancethen you will be hired with intermediate English. This is what the main objective of our training - maximum preparation for the interview on all of the above. And, moreover, we give the most necessary in English, on what topics and directions to teach it for an interview, so that you are not distracted by a non-priority one.

Flight attendant education: any higher education is suitable

All airlines want to see in their staff not only beautiful and well-groomed employees, but also educated ones. Therefore, the requirements for flight attendants also include education. For Ukraine, this is at least basic higher education, that is, bachelor. Let's repeat: any higher education is suitable for becoming a flight attendant. In foreign airlines, you can get a job as a flight attendant with an education at the junior specialist level (incomplete higher education), that is, after graduating from any college.

The following requirements from this block are not so formalized, but they are also very important in order to become a flight attendant. They relate to universal human qualities and skills, and provide for a candidate for the position of a flight attendant with developed communication skills. In all SkyJob training sessions, our students train and develop these abilities to one degree or another. We give you the basics of both verbal and non-verbal communication, the so-called body language, which is also an important element of presenting yourself in the most favorable light. After working with our team and with a group of others wishing to become flight attendants, you will not only improve your communication skills for an interview (not limited to the position of a flight attendant), but you will also possess the tools for self-development in the future.

We have named the main requirements for flight attendants in terms of mental development. This also includes psychological traits, for example, stress resistance, benevolence, openness, etc. In our training sessions, you will learn how these qualities are tested by airline recruiters during an interview, practice typical tasks and get recommendations on how to develop them yourself to be sure that you are quite suitable for all requirements for flight attendants.

Age, health, physical data, etc.

Any airline employs different flight attendants and stewards: both in appearance and age, and in large international ones - in skin color and nationality. Most often, flight attendants are girls and young people, well-groomed, tidy and attentive. You can also meet older people on board, and especially in foreign airlines, flight attendants and retirement age... As a rule, these are old-timers of aviation, who have been flying for more than a dozen years. But no matter what age you are trying to become a flight attendant, you must answer certain requirements... There are basic requirements for flight attendants all over the world, in any airline, and there are, of course, specific requirements depending on the country of the airline's base and local cultural traditions, government, religious beliefs, etc.

Flight attendants age

Let's start with one of the most important requirements - age. There is a general requirement in aviation for all airlines in the world that the minimum age for admission to the position of a flight attendant is 21 years. But, you can submit a questionnaire and pass an interview at the age of 20! An example is Inna, a graduate of our course, who as a student last year training and at the age of 20, was invited and successfully interviewed in one of the best airlines in the world, Qatar Airways! The requirements for the upper age limit for admission to this job differ from airline to airline. For example, in Ukraine, a limit of 30 years is adopted, if there is no previous experience of working as a flight attendant. In foreign airlines there is no clear limit on the maximum age, and you can become a flight attendant even after 30 years. They prioritize human qualities, the ability to work in a team, experience of working with people, clients, and other skills that our team teaches and trains on the SkyJob course. Of course, it will be problematic to get this position at the age of, for example, 50 years old, but, in our experience, and this is confirmed by the familiar flight attendants of foreign airlines, you can easily get a job there up to 35 years old inclusive, and recently we became aware of a case when an interview 42-year-old woman successfully passed Etihad Airways!

Height and weight of flight attendants

Height and weight are the next important requirements for flight attendants. Growth has no clear numerical limit. The main thing is the ability to reach the mark of 210 cm (or 212 cm depending on the airline) while standing barefoot on toes with an outstretched hand. It is allowed to try with different hands and standing on different legs, because a person is asymmetrical, and besides, everyone has a different stretch in the joints. This is obtained for girls with a height of about 163+, but sometimes those who are shorter reach it.

With weight, the situation is even easier. As a rule, you are not weighed at an interview if there are no clear signs of completeness. In other words, the weight should be relatively proportional to your height, that is, you should have a harmonious figure, and you should not worry about an extra kilogram or two.

Specific requirements for flight attendants

Some airlines also have their own specific requirements for flight attendants. For example unusual requirement QatarAirways, which is one of the target airlines of our SkyJob training, and where two of our graduate girls were interviewed successfully, this is the complete absence of a tattoo on the body. By the way, airlines Emirates, Etihad, UIA, etc. allow the presence of a tattoo, but on parts of the body that are invisible in clothing.

In general, the requirements for flight attendants certainly imply good health for candidates for this position. Those who dream of becoming flight attendants should not be afraid of this requirement: health does not have to be perfect. The main thing is the absence of chronic and sexually transmitted diseases, problems with the nasopharynx and breathing, with the skin. Minor deviations are allowed if they do not interfere with flight operations. The final decision on admission to flights is made by the flight doctor at the medical board. The overwhelming majority of young people pass it successfully.

After several flight attendants went to court with a complaint for discrimination on the basis of age and appearance, as well as violation labor rights... The company was accused of setting standards for appearance and dividing flight attendants into special beauty groups.

As it turned out, all the flight attendants of the airline were forced to take a full-length photo, took a large face and measured it with a centimeter, eventually dividing everyone into several groups. The first group included young, slender and tall ones, and the last group included those who are already over 40 or who wear clothes over size 46. The flight attendants who disagree with this approach have already filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office and even wrote to President Putin, and now they decided to go to court.

One of the initiators of the lawsuit was the 41-year-old flight attendant Evgenia Magurina. Until recently, Magurina was a senior flight attendant, flew mainly abroad and received awards from management for good work, but since last summer, the sky is open for her only over Russia. And in the same position as Magurin, there were about 400 flight attendants, who by age and appearance did not fit into the new unspoken rules of the airline.

We were all told that in Aeroflot now only young and thin people will fly abroad. We were all massively photographed and measured, some were even weighed - this was done under the pretext of rebranding the airline and ordering a new uniform for employees. My life has changed since mid-August, but many have suffered earlier. Everyone who was over 40 and who had clothes over size 46 was no longer put on overseas flights. We were all gathered to department number 1, having arranged for us a real torture: we were left with only night and short morning flights. When I asked what, in fact, was happening, I was told that these were the new rules of the game and I was removed from international flights because of the size of my clothes - now it should be no more than 46, and I had 48, - she said Magurin.

The flight attendants who were suspended from foreign flights lost their salaries sharply, since the payments for flights outside Russia are several times higher than the payments for those in the country. At the same time, the workload has only increased due to frequent night flights and it is very difficult to work in this mode.

According to the employees of the company, a form of 50-52 sizes was taken from the warehouse, and the doctors of VLEK (medical flight expert commission), as part of the trend for rejuvenation, were instructed, under any pretext, to get rid of employees who do not meet the new standards of appearance.

However, as it turned out, it is not only Aeroflot that makes stringent demands on flight attendants. Here are the flight attendants recruited by Aeroflot and other popular airlines:

5. Minimal makeup.

History of the issue

First, the passengers on the plane were served by the co-pilot when he had free time. The position of a flight attendant appeared only with the development of aviation. At first, only men were accepted for this position, since they had to carry heavy loads, and the requirements for the comfort of the first passengers were not the same as they are now. The first flight attendant was the American Ellen Chen. She herself offered her services to the airline.

The managers of the company, just at this time, who were going to introduce the position of a steward on passenger flights, following the example of German air carriers, decided that female stewards would be a good move: the presence of young girls on the plane, who are not afraid to fly all the time, would reassure both passengers and their relatives on earth. In addition, the skills of a nurse could come in handy in flight, especially considering that the then low-flying planes shook and rocked a lot, and many passengers did not feel very well. As a result, together with Ellen, the company hired 7 more nurses no older than 25 years old, who would weigh no more than 52 kilograms. At that time, planes could not yet carry a lot of weight, so every kilogram was counted.

The first flight attendant in the USSR was 20-year-old Elsa Gorodetskaya. IN staffing table then there was no position of a flight attendant, so the girl was issued a storekeeper, but was called a barmaid. She had to carry 40-kilogram suitcases with cutlery, so the work was not easy.

In 2015, feminists in the UK staged a rally over demands for women. At this rally, many opposed the harsh requirements for flight attendants. Women at the rally assured that such demands are illegal and should be canceled. Now many companies hire not only flight attendants, but also stewards, so that girls do not have to carry heavy loads and help passengers pack their luggage. This is done on many Aeroflot flights.

The official website of Transaero provides the following data:

Girls: height 165 - 180 cm,

Boys: height 170 - 185 cm

Elena Luchkina (Aeroflot)

And as usual, I'll give you an example! Height should be at least 160 cm, but not higher than 175 cm. This is in order to reach the shelves, if necessary (do not stand up for a flight attendant in a dress on the back of the chair, or even more so on a seated passenger). If relative to me, then my height is 164 cm, there were definitely no problems with this during the passage! We had a "Thumbelina" for an interview, she was very pretty, she knew English well, but as soon as she entered the office for an interview, she was taken to measure her height. Unfortunately, she turned out to be too small for a flight attendant. And girls with a height of 178 were taken without problems. With small deviations from the norm, a successful interview is possible.

Alina Krumina (Etihad)

Growth, in my airline? No matter how tall you are, if you can reach the 210cm mark on your toes, you are good. At the same time, an important role can be played not so much by the height itself as by the length of the arms.

Growth is necessary in order to reach emergency equipment (masks in panels in case of decompression, for example).
To open the shelves that are in the tail directly in the ceiling, there is also stored equipment (baby bassinets).

The profession of a flight attendant is considered prestigious and highly paid. Many girls and boys are attracted to work as flight attendants primarily because of the opportunity to travel a lot.

But for most, the question of how to become a flight attendant remains open. Education and employment are not as difficult as many think. You won't have to study at a university specifically for this, it will be enough to take specialized courses.

Each airline has its own requirements for candidates for the position of flight attendants and stewards. At the same time, one can single out the main criteria by which air carriers select employees:

  • education;
  • knowledge of foreign languages;
  • health status;
  • age;
  • growth;
  • clothing size;
  • appearance;
  • citizenship;
  • the presence of a criminal record;
  • military duty.

Education

Persons with secondary education can apply for the position of a flight attendant, that is it is enough to finish 11 classes. But candidates with higher education have a better chance.

Foreign language

Knowledge of basic English is sufficient to work on domestic flights. To serve passengers on international routes, you need to know the language perfectly. Requirements apply to both oral and written speech. But it is even better if the candidate knows several foreign languages.

Health

Working as a flight attendant assumes no health problems. Regular flights, frequent change of time and climatic zones require endurance and a high degree of adaptation.

The state of health is assessed by a special commission - a medical-flight expert commission. Special attention is paid to the examination of vision, as well as of the cardiovascular and nervous systems.

Psychological testing is also carried out. It is necessary to assess stress resistance, discipline, communication skills and organizational skills.

Age

Young people over 18 years of age can become flight attendants. Most airlines for people with no work experience set the age limit at 26 years. And those who have experience in this profession should be no older than 35 years old.

Growth

In the job descriptions of flight attendants and stewards, the following growth limits are indicated:

  • for women - 160-175 cm;
  • for men - 170-185 cm.

This is due to the fact that the flight attendant should easily reach the overhead bins with hand luggage. They are usually located 212 cm above the floor. Growth below average will cause limitations in this regard. And a stewardess who is too tall will have to bend down all the time.

Clothing size

The physique of both girls and young people should be average. Clothes sizes:

  • for women - from 42 to 46;
  • for men - 46 to 54.

Airlines do not order plus-size uniforms for a number of reasons:

  • The flight attendant must walk between the rows of seats in the cabin without touching passengers.
  • Excess weight can interfere with emergency evacuation actions.
  • It is also associated with the free entry and exit of passengers from the liner.

Appearance

Air carriers put forward requirements not only to the size of the clothes of future flight attendants, but also to other parameters of appearance. The face and visible areas of the body should be free of scars, scars, birthmarks or other aesthetic defects.

Certain air carriers generally do not allow tattoos and piercings for future employees. Some companies are more loyal - the requirements apply only to exposed parts of the body that are visible from under the uniform.

Citizenship

Russian airlines employ only Russian citizens. Sometimes an exception is made for residents of Belarus.

Conviction

Aviation safety requirements are high, so when hiring a candidate is carefully checked for a criminal record that is unacceptable.

Military duty

Boys who have not served in the army will not be able to get on board. And those unfit for military service young people are unlikely to pass a medical examination

Aeroflot

The largest airline in Russia is Aeroflot. Its route network includes several dozen international and domestic flights. The status of a reliable carrier and a social program for employees attracts many.

The company's requirements for candidates for the position of flight attendant are as follows:

  • Education is at least complete secondary.
  • Knowledge of English. For some destinations, it is necessary to know the language of the country to which the flights are made.
  • Military ID for men.
  • Age from 18 to 35 years old.

To work in business aviation, you will need a university degree, excellent command of English, and between 23 and 40 years of age.

Selection

For employment, you need to fill out a form and attach photos. This can be done online on the website of the selected airline. If the candidacy is approved - for email a notification will come and it will be possible to participate in a further competition.

First, everyone undergoes an interview, and if it is successful, the candidate is sent to a medical commission.

Interview

Includes interviews with admissions officers, psychology testing, and an English or other language exam. The candidate will need to tell about himself. Achievements in sports, medical education, or personal growth and anger management courses are a plus.

Often you have to answer standard questions:

  • why this particular position and what is most attractive about it;
  • why this particular company;
  • what do you like about working with people and the service sector.

Not only education and appearance will be evaluated, but also the manner of presenting oneself, the timbre of the voice, general level culture. Polite, confident candidates are preferred.

After a successful conversation, you will need to go psychological tests on the degree of adaptation to critical situations, stress resistance, communication skills.

Candidates who have passed the first two stages are admitted to the foreign exam. To confirm the level of language proficiency, you need to pass grammar tests, listening, and a conversation will complete the test.

Body check

For a medical examination, you need to prepare certificates from a narcologist, from tuberculosis, psychiatric and dermatovenerologic dispensaries. You will also have to pass tests.

You will need to be examined in advance by a surgeon, ENT, ophthalmologist, neurologist. Also, members of the medical commission are provided with the results of fluorography, EEG, ECG.

Only after considering the entire package of documents, VLEK decides whether a person is suitable for work as a flight attendant.

Training

Successfully interviewed and the medical board the candidate goes to special courses. Most airlines conduct them in Moscow. Accommodation during training and travel expenses are not covered by the airline.

The courses are held for 90 days with classes 6 times a week for 8 hours. They teach rules of conduct in emergency situations, the device of aircraft, regulatory documentation related to air transportation. Students are trained on mock-ups of airliners.

Practice

The final stage before work is practice. The internship takes place on the airline's flights for a total duration of 30 hours.

Flight attendant courses

To become a flight attendant, you can study at a specialized school. These can be either separate private schools or with airlines. Studying with a specific carrier, you will need to work in the company for 3 years. On average, courses last 2-4 months.

Schools

Training can be taken in the following schools:

  • Training center at Vnukovo airport. Initial training courses are periodically held there.
  • Aeroflot Aviation School. The cost of training, taking into account practice, is 65 thousand rubles. The course lasts 50 days.
  • School of flight attendants in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Krasnoyarsk and Krasnodar. Training lasts 2.5 months, and the cost of the course, together with practice, is 65 thousand rubles.
  • School of stewardesses "Skyjet". A course on the basics of flight attendant work lasting 2.5 weeks costs 30 thousand rubles. The training of flight attendants and stewards for business aviation lasts 30 days at a price of 70 thousand rubles.
  • Aviation and Transport College in St. Petersburg with a degree in Transport Service.

Program

Training at a flight attendant school can be divided into the following blocks:

  • Rules of conduct in an emergency - evacuation of passengers, emergency landing.
  • Health care.
  • Express English course.

Future workers are taught how to use rescue equipment. The device of airliners is also necessarily studied.

At the end, all students undergo practical training. On simulators that simulate the cabin of the aircraft, future flight attendants practice their skills of behavior in critical situations.

Duties

The main thing in the work of a flight attendant is to control the safety of passengers during the flight. Besides:

  • meeting and placing clients;
  • pre-flight briefing;
  • provision of emergency medical care if necessary;
  • control of passenger behavior;
  • interior inspection to identify foreign or prohibited items;
  • distribution of food and drinks.

Also, flight attendants monitor the climatic indicators in the cabin, check the set of rescue equipment.

Pros and cons of the profession

There are advantages and disadvantages to working as a flight attendant. The first include:

  • Early retirement is at the age of 45 on average. But at the same time, the flight experience must be 10 years, and the total - at least 20 years.
  • Discounts on air tickets.
  • The opportunity to see the world.
  • High salary and attractive social package.
  • Possibility to improve knowledge of foreign languages.
  • Free meals.

The disadvantage of this profession is considered to be irregular working hours, elevated level stress. And due to frequent flights, occupational diseases - varicose veins, problems with the spine. Difficulties during pregnancy are also possible.

Most Russian air carriers regularly replenish their staff of flight attendants - selections are held several times a year. If the candidate fits all the requirements, then it is quite possible to get a job as a flight attendant or steward.
