Having received the Gpon router at MGTS's disposal, setting up access to the network should be the next step.

And after the operation of the device is configured, the user will have Internet at a speed of up to 2500 Mbps.

Such characteristics and the ability to provide coverage with a large area provide good popularity for this very reason.

Moreover, the provider itself offers quite high-speed fares at competitive prices.

The principle of operation of a GPON router

The term GPON refers to modern version optical networks, allowing to develop tremendous speed - even more than is required for one ordinary user.

For any modern application, games and even 4K video, even 100 MB / s is more than enough.

However, using GPON routers, you can provide high-speed Internet not one, but dozens of users at once.

And the number of people who want to get the same fast and high-quality access is constantly growing - although problems may arise when using routers.

The maximum value of the data transfer rate for most routers reaches 300 Mbps.

Features of the services of the provider MGТ М (MGTC)

MGTS has been offering its services as an Internet provider in the Russian Federation for almost 15 years.

A project to create a high-speed fiber-optic network MGTS GPON was launched in 2013.

The company provides its subscribers with high-speed access - the minimum package includes communication with a data transfer rate of up to 30 Mbps, the maximum - above 200 Mbps.

Figure: 2. The main page of the MGTS company.

At the same time, MGTS is a monopoly on metropolitan market, providing also regular, wired telephone communication.

In addition to access to the network, subscribers can connect to digital television with more than 200 channels.

And now, when the speed of data transmission by the provider has noticeably increased, the need for GPON routers is gradually disappearing.

Setting up a router for MGTS

By concluding a contract with MGTS, the user gets a GPON router at his disposal.

The device is already configured to work with a specific operator and does not require additional actions on the part of the subscriber - just connect home (office) computers and mobile gadgets to it.

Until the wireless connection is configured (or reconfigured if it is lost due to a power surge, software failure, or someone else's actions), this method is the only possible one.

After that, the user is required to open any browser and enter the corresponding address value in the address bar.

It can be found in the contract from the instruction manual for the router, from the sticker on the device itself, or found on the network by the name of the router. This is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254.

You should know: You can configure the router even if there is no Internet connection. Although, if there is network access, the result is correct setting will be clearer.

Entering the settings menu, you need to enter your password and login. By default, on most routers they are the same - admin.

Sometimes the MGTS operator sets its own values \u200b\u200b- for example, mgts / mtsoao.

It is advisable to change these values \u200b\u200bto prevent unauthorized people from accessing your network - although this usually only works with a password.

The connection type should not be set - it is already included in the router firmware. Now only the wireless network needs to be configured.

Configuring wireless networks

Before configuring the wireless connection, the user should check for the presence, which can be configured on the tab (section of the main parameters).

This option is required to correctly distribute IP addresses to devices connected to the router.

After that, you can go directly to the wireless access point setup itself:

  1. Go to the wireless network menu;
  2. Go to its main parameters;
  3. Enable the network by checking the box next to the corresponding item;
  4. Assign an SSID name (you can find it out from the sticker on the router itself);
  5. Leave the rest of the settings unchanged.

Figure: 3. Setting up a wireless network on the MGTS GPON router.

What you need to know: If there are other Wi-Fi routers nearby that operate at the same frequencies as the already configured router, you may need to change its frequency. In addition, depending on the distance of the device to the mobile and stationary computers, smartphones and tablets connected to it wirelessly, you can set the signal to high or low.

Configuring Ports and Wireless Security

It can lead to the fact that unauthorized people and even intruders gain access to your network.

Therefore, one of the first steps in setting up a wireless connection is to set a secret combination of characters.

You can avoid such a situation, and not reduce the speed of your Internet due to outsiders connecting to it, by following these steps:

  1. Go to the "Security" tab;
  2. Select the name of the newly created wireless point;
  3. Change password value. All other parameters do not need to be changed - the wireless network will work without it;
  4. Save the set configuration and exit the settings menu.

Figure: 4. Go to the security settings on the GPON router.

As a method for encrypting data, it is worth using a technology that reliably protects a wireless connection.

And when choosing a password, you should come up with a rather complicated and at the same time memorable combination.

It is advisable to use words and numbers for this that are meaningful only to the user, but exclude dates of birth and names.

Problems with the MGTS network

If you have problems accessing the network using MGTS router GPON and the inability to configure this device so that the Internet will work again, you should contact the technical support of the operator.

It is possible that the causes of the problems do not depend on the user.

Although recently, with the transition from ADSL routers to GPON routers, the number of subscribers' requests regarding access problems has decreased.

MGTS Gpon Wi-Fi router settings

With this step by step instructions you can change the settings of your point wi-Fi access on a router in the MGTS network.

They say that getting everything at once is impossible. But in the age of technology, the time has come to abandon all stereotypes. You can upgrade your home and get maximum comfort if you take advantage of new technologies. Such as GPON from MGTS.

So what is GPON?

GPON is the fiber optic cable that revolutionized communications. The data transfer rate on such a channel reaches 1 Gbps. The cable is routed directly to the apartment: immediately after that, a reliable signal and high access speed are guaranteed at any time of the day.

Super-speed home Internet via wire or Wi-Fi, digital TV with interactive broadcast control functions, cool features of a home phone, online video surveillance of an apartment and burglar alarms - with GPON, all this can be connected right from home at any time.

What equipment is needed to connect GPON and how much does it cost?

The good news: you don't need to spend money to connect to GPON. An optical ONT modem, through which all digital services are provided, is supplied by MGTS to each client free of charge. The modem has a built-in high-speed Wi-Fi module - it is responsible for the wireless network: this means that you will not need to pull extra wires around the apartment and you can connect several gadgets at the same time.

To bring GPON to your apartment, you just need to call an MGTS employee by leaving a request on the website or by calling the company's 24/7 single contact center. You will quickly have an ONT modem installed and configured, and you can immediately connect to the Internet, interactive television or other services. In the future, you can independently order additional functions through your Personal Account or by phone.

And if you need to temporarily (suddenly start repairing) or permanently disable the services, then no effort will be required - unless you have to dial the number of the MGTS round-the-clock single contact center.

What opportunities does GPON provide?

1. High speed internet

When you urgently need to finish work at home or choose a hotel for vacation, and the Internet pages endlessly freeze, patience comes to a boiling point. A new generation Wi-Fi router will help you save your nerves and enjoy surfing the Internet.

What speed do you need? There is an opportunity to choose in the range from 30 to 500 Mbps. The coolest thing is that even the highest speed will be available not only on a stationary computer, but also on all wireless gadgets - smartphones and tablets - via Wi-Fi.

If necessary, you can connect an antivirus without leaving your home - through your personal account on the MGTS website. And for parents there is an opportunity to control their child's travels on the Internet with the "White Internet" service - you can set the time that the child can spend on the network, and besides, he will not come across unnecessary and harmful information.

2. HD TV

Keeping up with the latest cinematography, sporting events and world news is easy. With GPON home tv turns into a sheer pleasure: with high definition pictures, clear sound and the ability to adjust the broadcast to your own schedule!

But it will be difficult to choose something specific - after all, more than 230 channels are offered. There is an opportunity to choose a thematic package to your taste or use a personal TV menu - in addition to the main package, choose exactly those channels that are of interest to you. And yes, one channel will cost as little as 1 RUB / month.

The special beauty of GPON-based television is that it becomes truly interactive: you can set reminders of the beginning of the desired programs, record them, pause and watch them in replay. Now you do not need to adjust your schedule for the TV program, it will adapt itself to you.

If mom wants to watch a melodrama, dad wants a football match, and a child wants to watch cartoons, then there is no need to argue anymore! Multiroom allows you to connect up to three TVs to digital television for the price of one. Happinnes exists!

Want more? You are welcome! The modern Huawei DN-300 TV box turns your TV into a multimedia center: watch your own photos and videos "on the big screen", listen to your favorite music with clear and surround sound. Renting a set-top box will cost 99 rubles a month, if you connect the Basic package for 129 rubles a month, and it will be free if you choose the exquisite Nothing Extra package for 300 rubles a month.

3. Security alarm

A burglar alarm is the surest and easiest way to secure your home. Wireless sensors are installed on doors, windows and inside the apartment that react to intrusion and movement. The security system controller is connected to the ONT-modem, which transmits these signals to the control panel of the non-departmental security service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs - and a rapid response team immediately leaves for you.

A feature of the MGTS security alarm is secure communication channels between your apartment and the Ministry of Internal Affairs control panel. There are two of them: fiber optic GPON and cellular GSM. The network automatically tests the channels every few seconds. If the main - wired - channel fails, the backup - GSM-channel is automatically activated. And if both are switched off for at least 3 seconds, the alarm is triggered.

Maintenance of communication channels and the equipment itself is included in the cost of signaling. Being safe both day and night has now become even easier and more accessible.

4. Video surveillance

Are you often distracted from work to check how you are at home? You definitely will not be disturbed by a video surveillance system. Wherever you are, you can always know exactly what is happening with your child or elderly relatives. You can also check the work of a nanny, au pair, or construction worker. Agree, it's much quieter this way.

Camcorders that are already configured to work with a video surveillance system are connected to the network wirelessly. With GPON, you will get a clear picture of what is happening in high quality and without delays, even if you are on the other side of the world. You can watch the video not only from a computer, but also from a smartphone or tablet - through a mobile application.

Video surveillance system recordings go to a closed cloud archive on the MGTS portal, so there is no need to fear information leakage. Records are stored from 5 to 30 days, depending on the volume of the video archive that you choose. Cameras can record HD video in day or night mode, with or without sound - however you want. If you need to save some fragment, you can upload it to your computer.

Cameras are equipped with sound and motion sensors, and you can configure them so that they inform you about any unplanned incidents. Did the kid put on a rock concert for all the neighbors? Are the repairmen suspiciously staying near the safe? Has someone entered an apartment or room when no one should be there? You will know about it immediately.

By the way, the video surveillance system is a good story for very busy and forgetful people. With its help, you can "look home" at any time and check whether you have turned off the iron and whether you have forgotten to turn off the tap in the kitchen.

5. Digital home telephony

The home phone faded into the background after the appearance of mobile phones in our lives. But he, as before, is the most reliable, convenient and safe way to communicate with loved ones. In addition, GPON opens a "second wind" to landline telephony. New opportunities will allow you to remember that making a home phone call is convenient and profitable.

The "Digital Caller ID" service makes it possible to answer only those calls that you are waiting for. Thanks to automatic identification, you will always know who is calling you. After all, the phone will display the full ten-digit number of the caller.

Afraid of missing an important call? Redirect incoming calls from your home phone to any other number, including mobile.

The second line is no longer a cool gadget, but a vital necessity. So be it on your home phone! Now you will be available for a call even while talking with another person, and you can switch from one subscriber to another and vice versa by pressing one button.

1. If you are making repairs, then in the hallway, near the front door, select an area where the ONT Wi-Fi modem will be installed in the future. Provide a 220 V outlet near it. Do not forget that the cable entry into the apartment should be left unsealed. But the MGTS master can install an outlet for you and later along with the modem.

2. Wi-Fi coverage of the modem is sufficient for standard apartments, but if you have a large area or complex layout, you may need a Wi-Fi signal booster or PLC adapters.

3. Not only adults, but even a junior schoolchild, not to mention a teenager, cannot do without home Internet today. From the future installation site of the ONT modem to all workplaces, lay a UTP cat 5 cable to the finishing of the walls, and then the wires will not interfere and spoil the look of the interior. If your repair has already been completed, you can do without a cable - all gadgets can be connected to the network via Wi-Fi.

4. The CCTV camera can be placed on a shelf, mounted on a wall, or hung from the ceiling. It also requires a separate 220V outlet. If you are just planning a renovation in the nursery, provide a camera outlet high up on the wall or behind false ceiling panels so that the child cannot reach the wire.

5. If you are just planning a renovation in the nursery, provide a socket for the camera in advance - preferably high on the wall or behind false ceiling panels so that the child cannot reach the wire.

6. If the apartment is small, it will be effectively protected by a standard set of security alarm equipment with two sensors: a contact on the door and a volume motion sensor. The equipment can be purchased or rented. The sensors are wireless, but the control device, uninterruptible power supply and radio receiver must be connected to the ONT modem and the power supply network. Therefore, it is better to place them in the hallway, near the modem, and provide a triple 220 V outlet nearby.

7. It is better to install a landline telephone in the most "passable" place of the apartment, where it is quickest to reach each family member. Choose a tariff plan based on your talents in the conversational genre - from 205 rubles per month.

8. Excess wires not only spoil the look of the bedroom, but also interfere with proper sleep. It is best to prepare for connecting digital television even at the repair stage: lay a hidden UTP cat 5 cable to the TV from the place of the future ONT modem installation. If the repair has already been completed, the TV can be connected to home network internet via PLC adapter.

1. What is the GPON service from MGTS?
Currently, MGTS in Moscow is carrying out a large-scale modernization of its network. The GPON service from MGTS is an evolutionary development of the telephone company's subscriber network, associated with the transition from using a copper cable to using an optical cable. Optical cables have long been used in the field of communications, but mainly for building their own network of telecom operators. Their use on a massive scale to connect subscribers is relatively new. A feature of the optical cable is the move away from the use of copper conductors in favor of glass fibers. The signal carrier is not electrical impulses, but light impulses that can propagate through such a cable over long distances without significant loss of quality. The abbreviation GPON stands for "Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network", which can be roughly translated as "Gigabit Passive Optical Network". A feature of GPON is the ability to connect multiple (up to 128) subscribers using one optical fiber, laid from the operator's node to the building (residential building). Inside the building, fiber is branched using optical splitters to the required number of subscribers. Splitters work on optical principles and do not require any power supply. Possible practical example is the connection of 32 subscribers to one optical fiber. After the splitters, the branched optical cable is led directly into the subscriber's apartment. Thus, using one optical fiber, you can connect the entrance of a residential building or part of it, depending on the number of apartments. Special equipment is installed in the subscriber's apartment - ONT (optical network terminal), which is the property of MGTS. It is transferred to the client in the form of a free rental for the entire duration of the contract. For simplicity, the ONT will hereinafter be referred to as an optical modem. The optical modem is part of the MGTS operator's network and is under its control.

2. And what is it for?
Traditionally MGTS has been a provider of wire ("fixed") telephone services. Recently, the relevance and demand for this service is falling. This is for reasons of increasing prevalence mobile communicationwhich is much more convenient. In order not to be left out of business, MGTS once offered more modern services - the Internet, and then television. These services have been and are being provided by aDSL technology, using the same copper line to which the telephone is connected. The quality of such a service is highly dependent on technical condition copper cables and their length. Because of this, the company cannot guarantee the quality and the very possibility of providing services to each of its clients. Telephone cables were installed to provide voice telephone services and are poorly suited for data transmission. Because of this, some customers are not satisfied with the quality of this service. First of all, these are those who are at a considerable distance from the telephone exchange. In addition, ADSL has already reached its limits and further growth of speeds is very difficult. For these and some other reasons, ADSL is increasingly losing its appeal in favor of other technologies, such as Ethernet. Ethernet access is provided by a large number of independent Internet providers. They are more actively promoting their services, more customer-oriented. For many reasons, MGTS found it difficult to work in the new conditions.
In an effort to keep up with the times, MGTS decided to carry out a very expensive modernization of its network and introduced the GPON technology. Thanks to the use of optical fiber, it becomes possible to guarantee high quality services to each subscriber. In this case, there is a qualitative leap in the data transfer rate. MGTS is able to offer its customers tariffs 10 times faster than before, with high quality and stability. In addition, due to the large penetration of wired telephone communication into the apartments of Muscovites, she gets the opportunity to enter almost every apartment, installing equipment to subscribers that can provide all modern communication services with high quality at any time - digital television, internet and telephony. Thanks to this, MGTS can restore its partially lost positions and squeeze out Ethernet providers in the market. Now a potential client will be more preferable to receive all these services from MGTS, because necessary equipment to access the Internet, his apartment has already been installed, and to connect a TV, you need to buy or rent only a decoder. Thus, the transition to GPON technology is largely due to the interests of the company itself.

3. How does switching to GPON technology look like for a subscriber from a practical point of view?
Switching between subscribers, as well as connecting new ones, is carried out according to a standard project developed by MGTS. This project involves the installation inside the apartment of an optical modem and an electrical outlet for its power supply, above front door or in close proximity to it. If there is no possibility of connecting to the existing sockets in the indicated place, a new power line is drawn from the driveway. A hole is drilled from the apartment to the staircase, through which optical and power cables are inserted. Telephone wiring in the apartment is connected to the corresponding connector on the modem. This allows you not to redo the telephone wiring inside the apartment. The entire specified amount of work is performed free of charge, including consumables. These works are illustrated on the MGTS website in the gallery.

Some deviations from standard project are possible by mutual agreement with the team making the connection. For example, it is possible to lay cables through an existing special cable channel from the apartment to the floor board or to the staircase. However, it should be borne in mind that the service is provided free of charge, the team is limited both in time and in materials, therefore in some cases it may be required additional charges, and some may be refused. If repairs and the appearance of your apartment are dear to you, then the best choice would be to carry out preparatory work on your own, coordinating them with the connection team. Another option is to place the modem outside the apartment - in a separate locker or in a common vestibule (corridor) with a lockable door. However, this is a deviation from the project and may not be implemented in all cases. Remember that it is you who are responsible for the safety of the equipment.
From the optical modem, you can run a special copper cable (UTP) to the place where your computer is located. Another option is to use a wireless connection (Wi-Fi). To use it, your computer must be equipped with a Wi-Fi adapter. These adapters are usually built into all laptops. For a desktop computer, you will most likely have to purchase it separately.
It should also be taken into account that when using Wi-Fi, the location of the modem outside the apartment, and even more so inside a metal box, can significantly weaken the signal and lead to unstable work. The use of Wi-Fi by many housemates at the same time can create mutual interference and also negatively affect the stability of work.
When installing GPON, the telephone number most often does not change, but all will stop working. additional servicesusing the subscriber's telephone line. This is, for example, a burglar alarm or ADSL modem.
When connected tV MGTS you will need to lay a UTP cable to the installation site of the TV. The use of WiFi for this purpose is not provided, including due to the low reliability of WiFi. A decoder is installed next to the TV. Only one TV can be connected to the decoder. Decoder control, for example channel switching, is carried out from a separate remote control. In some cases, this remote control can also be controlled by the TV.

3.1. Who installs the equipment in the clients' apartments?
Due to the large volume of work, MGTS often involves its contractors. These are third-party organizations that work under an agreement with MGTS.

3.2. Does the quality of the contractors' installation work differ from the employees of the company itself?
There is no reason to assume that the quality of work of contractors is obviously worse. However, keep in mind the following:
Installation of optical cables requires high qualifications and expensive tools. Contractors of MGTS will not continue to operate the network, they only need to complete the work and hand it over to MGTS, with a short warranty period of 3 months. In view of this, it is difficult to expect their interest in durability and high quality. From messages in the forum, it can be assumed that contractors often involve random people in the implementation of work.

4. What are the benefits of GPON technology as a whole for the subscriber?
The specific benefits of the subscriber are largely determined by the services that he uses or plans to use in the future. In general, the transition to GPON will allow, in addition to the telephone, to receive all modern communication services at a more modern and high quality level.

4.1. What advantages will GPON technology bring when using only telephone communication?
If the subscriber's telephone line is in good working order, the transition to GPON will not bring significant benefits.
As a possible exception, only paid service digital caller ID (Caller-ID), which is not available on some old telephone exchanges.

4.2. What advantages will GPON technology bring when connecting to the Internet from MGTS?
If you have already used the Internet service using ADSL technology, then you should already form your opinion about its stability and quality. If you experience connection breaks, instability of work periodically occurs, then switching to GPON can save you from such problems. In addition, even if there are no stability problems, the transition will allow you to increase the access speed. One of the disadvantages of ADSL is the "asymmetry" of the communication channel, when the subscriber can download information at a higher rate than transfer it from himself to the network. As a result, applications that require high speed of transmission to the network may suffer - video calls in Skype, transfer of large amounts of data to the Internet, photos, uploading videos to youtube, etc. GPON is also asymmetric, but due to the increased speeds, the problem loses its relevance.
If you are just planning to connect to internet MGTS and did not use the ADSL service, and therefore cannot foresee the stability of its work on your line, then GPON will probably be the best choice.

4.3. What advantages will GPON technology bring when connecting TV from MGTS?
The answer is largely related to the previous point. With regard to television, such disadvantages as picture fading or scattering can be eliminated by switching to GPON. In addition, the use of television on ADSL technology takes up part of the bandwidth of the Internet channel, which can lead to a decrease in the speed of Internet access.

4.4. What does the expression "maybe" mean in the answers above?
GPON is not a magic cure for any problem. Ultimately, much is determined not by technology, but by its specific implementation. It is quite possible to get an unstable GPON instead of a stable working ADSL, and a faulty one instead of a perfectly working phone. Nevertheless, if we talk about data transmission as an alternative to ADSL, the theoretical potential for stability of GPON is significantly higher. GPON is comparatively new technology both in general and for MGTS. Some drawbacks may appear at the initial stage of implementation and be eliminated during operation.

5. What disadvantages will GPON technology bring to the subscriber as a whole?
Any innovation can experience difficulties on the way to mass adoption. The usual things start to look different and work differently than they used to. Some might say that this is the price for progress. In addition, you need to remember the principle "there is a double-edged sword." When we receive something, we pay something in return. It's up to you to decide how significant this fee is and whether it is worth the benefits that it promises. MGTS writes a lot about the advantages, but forgets to point out the disadvantages. Without seeing the full picture, you cannot make an informed choice.
First of all, you should start with the connection. You will have to set aside time for the team to visit. Connection may take several hours and may not be successful on the first attempt. You will have to come to terms with the appearance and quality of construction and installation work in your apartment, or do them yourself. One more working electrical appliance will appear in your apartment. No services, including telephone, will work if there is no electricity. You will have to pay extra for the 24/7 modem power supply. You may have to put up with some "dampness" of the service and shortcomings in the work, both at the initial stage and during operation.
If we consider the GPON technology as a whole, then in a certain sense it represents a step back in comparison with the existing "copper" technologies. The fact is that at present each subscriber, with already rare exceptions, is connected via a separate copper line dedicated only to him. In GPON technology, a subscriber does not have a separate line, he uses it in conjunction with other subscribers. One of possible reasons is the saving of optical fibers when laying cables. The disadvantage is reduced reliability. Equipment malfunction at one of the customers under certain conditions can lead to malfunction of others. At the same time, it is difficult to diagnose and repair, MGTS does not have free access to its own equipment located in the apartments of its clients.
Another factor is that the subscriber has technically sophisticated equipment that provides access to all services. As a result, those faults that were previously eliminated without the participation of the subscriber may require a visit to the home of an MGTS employee. This can inconvenience the client and increase the repair time. This is doubly unpleasant because you can simultaneously lose access to all services - television, internet, telephone, burglar alarms.
In addition, the use of optical fiber excludes the possibility of self-repair in case of damage. Repair requires special skills and complex, expensive equipment.
How likely are these faults? Difficult to answer. But it can happen to you and you need to be ready for it.

5.1. How much power does an optical modem consume?
The optical modem has a power of about 12W. Thus, energy consumption per month will be about 8.7 kW. With a single-rate metering in houses with gas stoves, this is about 35 rubles per month (the rate is 4.02 rubles / kWh until June 30, 2013). The calculation is given for the ZTE F660 modem based on the data specified in the specification. Other models have comparable power consumption.

5.2. What disadvantages will GPON technology bring when using telephone communications?
As noted, the main disadvantage is the dependence on the power supply. Even the simplest phone will not work without power to the optical modem. This can be important in some kind of emergency.
When using GPON, the telephony service is not an evolutionary successor of the classic wire telephony using a copper cable, but is actually another service - a type of Internet telephony (IP telephony, VoIP). The only difference is that the service is not provided over Internet channels, but within the company's own network, which is completely controlled by it. Internet telephony (in general) has evolved as a cheaper alternative to conventional telephony. Recent trends are such that it increasingly crowds out the traditional. The main reason for this is the lower cost and independence from traditional operators, which are often monopolists. When using Internet telephony, there is no need to use special, expensive "telephone" equipment. In the simplest case, a computer, headphones, a microphone and an Internet connection are enough. There are also devices that replace a computer and allow you to connect a regular phone. It is such a device that is included in the optical modem. By itself, the transition to Internet telephony is not a significant drawback, but it leaves a certain imprint on the operation of telephony. As a result, some of the disadvantages of Internet telephony can manifest themselves when using GPON.

5.2.1. Will the quality of telephone communications change when switching to GPON?
In most cases, the quality of the telephone connection will not improve. This is due to the fact that Internet telephony from MGTS continues to rely largely on traditional telephony technologies, therefore, in principle, it cannot exceed its limitations. Therefore, the maximum you can count on is that the quality will not be worse.

5.2.2. Will the reliability of telephone communications change with the transition to GPON?
The reliability of your telephone service may be impaired. This is caused by both dependence on power supply and the use of technically sophisticated equipment in your apartment to access the service.
In the classic version, your phone is connected directly to the equipment at the telephone exchange. This equipment is manufactured according to high industrial quality criteria and is designed for continuous operation for decades. It has been produced for a very long time, in the process of improvement it got rid of, probably, all the problems. All this made the phone the standard of reliability. All malfunctions not related to damage to the telephone wiring in the subscriber's apartment can be eliminated without his participation and presence. If the telephone itself is faulty, you can purchase and replace it yourself.
When using GPON telephony, everything looks different. Your phone is connected to the MGTS equipment located in your apartment, to an optical modem. It is a technically sophisticated microprocessor-controlled device. Despite the fact that it is manufactured by leading Chinese companies that produce network equipment, it has a shorter operating life, as it is designed for consumer market... Moreover, its software may contain errors. Not all malfunctions in its work can be eliminated remotely, without your participation. It may be necessary to call the wizard, and this creates additional inconvenience. If it breaks down, you cannot replace it yourself. First, it is prohibited by MGTS. Secondly, it requires special knowledge and parameters to configure. Thirdly, it is not widely available.
Modem malfunctions, power failures, or any other factors can lead to a situation where the phone will not work, but you will not know about it until you try to call yourself.

5.2.3. Will fax and analog modem work when switching to GPON?
Theoretically, nothing prevents modem and fax operation when using GPON-based telephony. However, according to messages in the forum, after several attempts, no one has yet managed to use the modem. The possibility of using a fax also requires verification. The root cause of this problem is the transition to Internet telephony.

5.2.4. Will ADSL modem work when switching to GPON?
No, it will not.

5.3. What disadvantages will GPON technology bring when using Internet access?
As noted above, the dependence on the reliability of the optical modem, which you cannot replace with another one yourself.
The consequence of this may be the instability of the modem when using the Internet intensively, for example, when using torrent clients for downloading. Unlike ADSL, this problem cannot be easily remedied by purchasing additional equipment. As a result of failures caused by the use of the Internet, the phone can also be disconnected. So you can, without knowing about it, find out that your phone does not work.
In addition, not all MGTS ADSL tariffs have their analogs in GPON. In particular, there are no tariffs for the Light series, with daily Internet payments.

5.3.1. I use the Internet using ADSL technology from MTS (Stream). Will he continue to work?
No, it will not continue. The contract with MTS will have to be terminated and a new contract with MGTS must be concluded.

5.4. There is a burglar alarm on my line. Will it continue to work with the transition to GPON?
No, it will not continue. You need to upgrade or replace equipment. Check the possibility of such a replacement and the cost with the company providing security services. In addition, the signaling connection to the GPON modem will still be less reliable.

6. General connection issues
6.1. Life and health safety
6.1.1. Can an optical modem be a fire hazard?
Maybe, but no more than another electrical appliance. Many electrical appliances in apartments are constantly on - refrigerator, TV and computer on standby, cordless phones, chargers, household kitchen appliances, etc. If you are used to turning off all electrical appliances when leaving home, then consider the possibility of turning off and on the modem without using a stool. Do not place the modem and its power supply in poorly ventilated and cluttered places, surrounded by flammable materials. See also the next question.

6.1.2. Could an incorrect wiring carried out by MGTS or its contractors cause a fire or electric shock?
You will have to make sure that the installation is correct yourself. Typical disadvantages are the use of a wire of insufficient cross-section and connecting it under one terminal of the machine together with a wire of a different cross-section. The installation of the wire should exclude its chafing in places of contact with metal doors, other conductive surfaces, in places of possible contact of people or animals. If you find deficiencies associated with a possible danger to life or health, demand their immediate elimination. Judging by the experience of forum visitors, such installation flaws are massive.

6.1.3. The installed modem has a wireless function. Is it dangerous for your health?
Currently, there are no sufficiently convincing studies to prove the hazard or safety to health. Exactly the same situation is developing around the discussion of mobile communications. However, keep in mind the following:
The WiFi transmitter power is much less than that of a mobile phone. In addition, the phone is applied to the ear, and the modem is located at a sufficiently large distance from the person. If, nevertheless, you are concerned about this problem, the WiFi function can be turned off with a button on the device body or in the modem settings.
When installing a modem, the WiFi function is often left on even if it is not needed, or the Internet from MGTS is not used at all. If you do not need the WiFi function, it is better to turn it off. The point is not only the possible danger to health, but also the excess pollution of the ether, which can create problems for your neighbors. It will also increase safety.

6.1.4. Access equipment and GPON equipment have a yellow hazard symbol in a triangle. Invisible laser radiation is sometimes written next to such icons. Is it dangerous for your health?

Similar signs and warnings are found on many household appliances such as CD and DVD players. The word "radiation" is an incorrect translation and in this context means "radiation". This radiation may not be visible, but is hazardous to the eyes. Do not try to look out of curiosity at the end of the optical connector disconnected from the modem, at the optical connector of the modem or the end of the broken cable, trying to visually detect the presence of a signal. This can cause serious, irreversible eye damage, even if you cannot see anything. The health hazard depends on the radiation power, however, safety requirements cannot be neglected. There are no harmful effects in normal use.

6.1.5. Does the optical cable contain components that are harmful to humans?
The optical cable has a complex, multi-layer structure, contains many protective sheaths that prevent fiber damage. The most dangerous for humans are the fragments of the optical fiber themselves. The diameter of the fiber itself is disproportionately smaller than the diameter of the cable. These fibers are made of glass and are so thin that they easily enter the body through the respiratory tract, skin, along with food, which can cause negative health effects. This, of course, is of the greatest importance in professional field, with constant contact with the optical fiber during its installation. In the event that the installation is carried out in compliance with safety requirements, employees will have a special container with them to collect such debris. However, carefully collect all debris and cable pieces left after installation. Do not let children play with cable cuttings.

6.2. Information security issues
Temporarily reduced
6.2.1. What is the problem of information security when using GPON equipment installed in apartments during the transition to this technology?
A GPON modem is a network device that functions as a router and SIP client. The scale of GPON implementation in Moscow promises to be such that it can become one of the largest installations in the world. In this case, almost the same type of equipment is used. All this can make it the subject of attacks, both massive and directed against individuals.
Make sure your modem has a WiFi password configured, even if you don't plan on using it. This password should only be known to you. Use a strong password. It is better that the network name (SSID) is not associated by strangers with you or the apartment number. Make sure that the passwords for accessing the modem have been changed and are not factory defaults. All this is not easy to do. Not everyone is able to do this on their own, in addition, the modem must be configured by MGTS and the client has limited opportunities to control or influence it. Even if everything was done initially, there is no guarantee that the settings will not change later.

6.2.2. What are the risks when using GPON telephony?
The GPON modem has a built-in universal SIP client. This allows, having access to the modem settings,
- disable the phone so that the subscriber cannot call from it
- steal identification data, for the purpose of calling at the expense of the subscriber or in order to impersonate him
- redirect calls to another server for recording and listening
- redirect calls to another server in order to change routing, which opens up a wide scope for fraud. By calling, for example, your bank or the police, while dialing the correct number, your call can be forwarded, unnoticed by you, to any other number where the scammers will pick up the phone.
The list is, of course, not complete. Of course, all this can be done on a regular phone connected using the old technology. However, this will require physical access to the subscriber's line and the installation of special additional equipment on it, which can be found. In the case of GPON, no additional equipment is needed, it is already installed in every apartment in the most conspicuous place - above the door.
In addition, due to the complete absence of physical traces, it will be difficult to prove the very fact of changing the settings, if it somehow affects your interests.

6.2.3. What are the risks when using GPON internet?
The Internet itself is not secure, there are risks when using any provider. If we consider such a problem as the theft of identification data, for example - logins and passwords from various sites, data for accessing Internet banks, then quite often the computer is infected with malicious software. However, the very widespread use of GPON modems can lead to the emergence of a separate type of malware aimed at changing the settings of the modem or introducing malicious software into it. This will allow you to discreetly redirect the user to other sites and intercept data. At the same time, antiviruses will not find any viruses on computers. The modem can become a member of a distributed network created to send spam or attacks on sites on the Internet. All this may look somewhat fantastic, but cases of infection of home routers have already been recorded earlier.

6.2.4. How can attackers find out the password for the GPON modem?
The universal password for accessing the Huawei HG8245 modem is widely known. Also, there is no (not found) available way to change it yourself.
Factory passwords from ZTE F660 are also widely known. It is possible to change them yourself, although self-tuning modem is prohibited. Nevertheless, there are far from isolated cases when these passwords are not changed during the modem installation and remain factory-set.
The initial configuration of modems is often performed by third parties, MGTS contractors. It is not known at all in what hands the passwords that they know can fall into.

6.2.5. How can a hypothetical attacker gain access to the modem's settings, even if he knows the password for it?
The most obvious way is via WiFi. Even if a password is set there, there are several possible channels for its leak. Also, through malicious software downloaded from the Internet. Through social engineering. In addition, it is theoretically possible that there may be ways to do this remotely via the Internet.

6.3. They called me from MGTS and said that if I refused to install GPON, they would disconnect my phone. Is this true and what to do?
Most likely, you were called not from MGTS, but from one of its contractors. They are financially interested in connecting GPON to as many subscribers as possible and are capable of cheating for this. Call MGTS and check the information yourself. You have signed a service agreement with MGTS, so they cannot turn off your phone with a click of your fingers. Judging by the experience of communication with MGTS of forum visitors, MGTS will maintain the old technology at least until 2015. No final decisions have been made on this matter yet. In addition, it is doubtful that MGTS will refuse to support the work of wired telephones and will try to break the contract unilaterally, this would be a big mistake. And the more "refuseniks" from GPON, the less likely such an event will occur.
If you were still disconnected, call MGTS and leave a request for a non-working phone. Most likely - this is the initiative of contractors.
If you decide not to switch to GPON, you may face significant psychological pressure from MGTS. Both promises and threats can be used. If calls and offers have become too intrusive - complain to MGTS by phone or write a claim.

6.4. They called me from MGTS and said that now switching to GPON is free, and in the future I will have to pay for it. Is this true and and what to do?
You need to be ready for this scenario, but you need to consider the following. For the sake of reporting and performance indicators, MGTS is interested in switching to GPON as quickly as possible. This can leave a certain imprint on what its representatives say on this issue. In addition, it is quite possible that you received a call not from MGTS, but from its contractors, see the previous question. It is likely that the connection of new subscribers in the future can be carried out on a paid basis. This is opposed by the fact that most providers have a free connection and this reduces the attractiveness mGTS offers... With regard to existing subscribers, it is doubtful that switching will ever become paid for them. This is also not in the interests of MGTS.

6.5. If I am not satisfied with the quality or features of the GPON, can I switch back?
According to the information available at the moment, reverse switching is not possible. Perhaps there are still some chances for a claim procedure or when going to court. Therefore, in the absence of serious reasons, it is better not to rush to switch to GPON. The forum has already described a case when MGTS in writing refused to return the old connection.

6.6. The description of the service on the MGTS website partially contradicts the one indicated here. Why is this happening?
MGTS is only interested in highlighting the positive side of its service, preferring to keep silent about the rest. The description of the service on the site does not always objectively reflect reality and contains not entirely correct comparisons, perhaps not intentionally. This is an illustration of what happens if technical information give it to the marketing department for processing, where they are poorly versed in technical details, but want to present everything in the most favorable light.

6.7. I cannot make a choice on my own. What will you advice me?
You still need to make a choice yourself, since it is you who will use the services of MGTS. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of GPON. In doing this, use not imaginary opportunities, but real advantages that are important just for you right now.
Nevertheless, if you have a positive attitude towards all technical innovations, preferring to keep up with the times and be at the forefront of progress, then GPON from MGTS is your choice. If your principle "works - do not touch!", Then it is better, at least, to postpone the transition to GPON.
It is also better to postpone, if you do not need anything from MGTS except a telephone, you will not get any advantages.
There are even more reasons not to switch to GPON if you have an alarm installed on the MGTS line.

7. Technical part / problems of operation
7.1. What is the GPON bandwidth and how is the bandwidth split between subscribers connected to the same fiber?
Total download speed (downstream) - 2.488 Gbps
The total upload speed (upstream) - 1.244 Gbps
Free download bandwidth is distributed among all subscribers. Thus, in the presence of free bandwidth, it is quite possible to get a download speed of the order of 1Gbps, if the modem has gigabit ports and is able to provide the specified speed. It is easy to calculate that when 32 subscribers are connected at maximum load, the average speed will be about 70 Mbps. Part of the download bandwidth is reserved for broadcasting television and telephony, which have a higher priority. In practice, of course, a channel congestion situation is unlikely.
The bandwidth is allocated in accordance with the TDMA principle, i.e. each device on the network is allocated a certain period of time during which it can transmit. In other words, GPON modems transmit "in turn". When 32 subscribers are connected, this will be less than 40 Mbps for each.
The fundamental difference is as follows. The modem could well get about 1 Gbps download bandwidth in case it is free. However, the transfer rate is limited by TDMA and the modem cannot use more than it is allocated.
Thus, the GPON channel is also asymmetric.

7.2. What modems does MGTS install and what is their difference
Currently, two models of modems are being massively installed - ZTE ZXA10 F660 and Huawei Echolife HG8245. Both modems are manufactured by well-known, large Chinese networking equipment companies. According to the specification, Huawei modems can have gigabit ports. However, Huawei modems distributed by MGTS do not have Gigabit Ethernet ports, so the use of tariffs with a speed of more than 100 Mbit / s will not be justified. Which model you will get depends on the equipment at the telephone exchange. If the station has ZTE equipment, then you will have a ZTE modem installed. If Huawei, then, respectively, Huawei modem. You cannot use a modem from another manufacturer due to compatibility issues. In addition, any manipulation of the modem, even disconnecting it from optical networkare banned by MGTS.

7.3. What is the reason for the possible instability of the modem under high load?
The MGTS modem acts as a router in the home network. With a large number of connections, primarily caused by torrent clients, it is possible that the modem's memory allocated for monitoring connections may be exhausted. It is necessary to select more gentle settings for the torrent client and avoid using it from several computers at the same time. A possible solution would be to switch the modem to bridge mode and use a separate, more efficient router. However, this configuration is not supported by MGTS. According to messages from the forum, MGTS is ready to reconfigure, but only if the client connects at rates for legal entities, which are several times higher.

7.4. When there is an incoming call on my phone, the time is lost or the call time is displayed incorrectly. What is the reason?
This feature may occur when the Caller-ID service is enabled with some phone models. When an incoming call arrives, the modem sends the time and date of the call to the phone along with the caller's number. If the time on the modem is not set correctly, then the phone, focusing on it, can adjust its clock accordingly or indicate it as the time of the call. The situation can be caused by several reasons. The modem does not have a built-in non-volatile clock and receives the correct time via NTP. If the Internet service is not connected, and the server specified in the settings is accessible only via the Internet, or NTP servers are not configured, the modem will not be able to receive the time. Another reason is that the modem receives the time, but the time zone is incorrectly specified in the modem. As a result, the clock in the modem may be shifted by several hours. To eliminate this problem, you need to contact MGTS. According to messages in the forum, MGTS is still ill-prepared to solve such problems.

7.5. What is the reason for the possible absence of tariffs of the Light series when connecting GPON?
First, the low attractiveness of such tariffs for MGTS. Secondly, there may be billing problems. In the configuration of modems supplied by MGTS, the modem acts as a router and the Internet is always "on". When using ADSL, billing is carried out upon the presence of a PPPoE session. GPON modems fail to use this principle. If you keep the modem off, the phone will not work. Perhaps similar tariffs will appear in the future.

7.6. Can I change the settings of the optical modem myself?
Officially - no, it is prohibited. In addition, these settings may be lost when the modem is flashed or the settings are changed by MGTS. On the other hand, for the convenience of the user, some of the parameters should still be available for changing, for example, WiFi settings. This issue requires additional study in practice. Currently MGTS is not ready to solve this problem. According to messages in the forum, in order to change the WiFi password, the MGTS call center was asked to write a statement in the office with unclear prospects.

7.7. What IP address does MGTS provide? Static or Dynamic? Public (external) or private (internal)?
MGTS provides a dynamic public address. The address can change if there is no modem in the network for more than 15 minutes. According to available information, MGTS is now issuing public addresses. However, with some probability it may become private due to the increased number of subscribers. Perhaps it also depends on the tariff, telephone exchange or some other factors.

7.8. Can I buy another compatible optical modem myself?
There is currently no information about compatible modems. In addition, this is prohibited by MGTS and is fraught with consequences. Buying a modem of the same model, but your own, usually doesn't make much sense. In addition, there may be some difference in the firmware of modems from MGTS.

7.9. Short beeps appear in the phone even before the full number is dialed. What could be the reason?
Perhaps the modem is configured too short time interval allotted for dialing numbers. If the problem disappears when dialing a number without pauses, then this is the problem. You need to contact MGTS to solve this problem.
