Alcatel OneTouch LINK Y850v0 is a router with great design and many features. The developers have tried to fit into their product maximum amount functions.

Despite the fact that this model was released at the end of 2014, today it is one of the most functional and easy to use. Then she became a wonderful gift for new year holidays... To understand if you should buy this device, let's take a closer look at it.

1 Distribution of the Internet signal to a maximum of 10 devices simultaneously. The Internet enters the router using a SIM card inserted into it (2G, 3G or 4G). You can use any card. But in Russia this router is supplied by the company. If you buy a device from this operator, remember that you can only use its SIM cards in it.

2 Wi-Fi signal coverage of a room of approximately 60 m2 (standard three-room apartment of European type - Euro-3).

3 Works from a 3000 mAh battery. This, according to the developers, is enough for 8 hours with the active connection of all 10 devices.

Spoiler alert: that's not true!

4 Connecting microSD memory cards. The volume of that can be 32 GB. There is also a built-in memory of 4 GB. This allows you to watch movies and other content without an Internet connection. When traveling, this feature will definitely be very useful.

5 Auto sync when connected with various devices without using a password. There is one to launch it.

The delivery set includes the device itself and the Soviet plug, which, by the way, is very convenient.

The fact is that you will not need to purchase additional adapters or something like that (manufacturers often put European or Asian sockets that are not suitable for residents of the former USSR).

In addition, there is more in the package.

Appearance

It should be said right away that appearance this model is very pleasant. The router will fit into absolutely any interior and even become an excellent decoration for it. Its dimensions are 8.4x8.4 cm.

The device is a small square that can be placed or laid on any surface. The thickness is 1.46 cm and the weight is 135 g. Agree, this is very little.

Thanks to this configuration, this gadget can be simply placed in a pocket or left in the glove compartment of a car.

On the front side of the device, you can see the Alcatel OneTouch inscription and a small screen, the inscriptions on which will indicate that the router is working.

They also display the level, the number of connected devices, operator and other data.

The panel is very conveniently located on the side, which can be removed. Under it you can see the connectors for the SIM card and microSD. You can also see the code there.

Advice: Immediately after purchase rewrite IMEI in your notepad... Better yet, take a photo of it and store the photo in the cloud. So it will definitely not disappear. If the device is stolen, you can prove that it is yours.

The panel can be removed very easily, without much effort... There is also a charging platform on the back. It is magnetic in this case.

That is, you just need to plug the plug into an outlet and attach to it.

This is very convenient and safe, as cables usually break and can be damaged in other ways. The process of recharging the battery will then begin.

In addition, there is a connector on the side. Everything is done quite conveniently, while no parts wobble, nothing "backlash".

Speed \u200b\u200band other performance characteristics

With this characteristic, the router is also doing quite well. Data reception speed when connected 4G is 150 Mbps and transmission is 50 Mbps.

With 3G, the speed reaches 21 Mbps.

It is important that the transition from 4G to or 2G and vice versa occurs automatically, you do not need to adjust any parameters manually.

The connection function is performed by the Qualcomm MDM9225 + AR6004 chipset.

As for the frequencies at which this router works, then full information about them can be found in table 1.

At the same time, Wi-Fi works with the 802.11 a / b / g / n standard. This means that the device in question can connect to any currently known Wi-Fi signal source.

In addition, MIMO 2 × 2 technology is used, which significantly increases the throughput.

It is thanks to these and other characteristics that LINK Y850v0 is one of the most popular today.

Convenient connection

As mentioned above, a very convenient and easy-to-use magnetic adapter is used to charge the device.

The user just needs to attach the plug to the charging pad and plug the whole structure into an outlet. This is how the device looks like when charging.

Also included is a USB cable, which allows you to charge the router from a computer or from a conventional charger for your smartphone or tablet.

Usually these have a plug with a connector for and a cable. So, you can freely use it for the Alcatel OneTouch access point.

You can find various additional devices to the router. For example, there is.

Actually, to get started, you need just insert the SIM card into the hotspot, turn it on and perform the initial configuration.

In the video below you can see the process of unpacking and connecting the model in question.

Features of the initial setup

In most cases, setting up a router starts with going to the "192.168.1.1" page in the browser. The login and password are traditional - "Admin" and "Admin".

Although there may be other data on the back of the device, be sure to browse the device and find this data.

With this interface you can do the following:

  • read and send messages (SMS);
  • edit or just view a book with contacts;
  • see the speed of receiving and sending data;
  • see the time of the current connection;
  • turn off the Internet (for this there is a large button at the top);
  • check and top up the account;
  • to rule various services from the operator;
  • change the password;
  • turn on a firewall and do a lot more.

To access all these functions, you just need to go to the corresponding section of the menu.

There is also mobile app ALCATEL LINK APPwhich is suitable for both.

The application is completely free and very easy to use.

With it, you can also manage connections, SMS messages and perform almost the same tasks as in the web interface.

It is important that ALCATEL LINK APP makes it possible to control traffic.

This means that, for example, if you have a certain amount of free MB within the tariff, but they are running out, the application will inform you about it.

Sound notifications can be configured in the appropriate section of the program.

In addition, you can control the amount of charge in the battery in the same way. Also, the user can organize access to files from or DLNA.

Of course, you can change the password and perform other similar operations in the program.

Although you will have instructions detailing what and how to do after turning on. You can also contact support. We will return to this later.

A significant drawback of this application is related to the fact that there is no Russian language in it. A lot of users ask developers to add it, but their requests go unanswered. In addition, all sorts of glitches are often observed in ALCATEL LINK APP. For example, when you first start it, you might get a message stating that the connection has already been made, although this is not the case. In general, developers still need to work hard to make a really high-quality mobile program!

Autonomy

Above, we said that, according to the developers, the 3000 mAh battery capacity of the device is enough for 8 hours if all 10 devices are connected at the same time (although, for example, 6 hours are indicated on the 4gltemall.com website).

They also say that in standby mode it supposedly can work all 200 hours. Real reviews indicate that the manufacturer lied a little in its conclusions.

For example, one of the users wrote that he had the router works for about 3-4 hours without recharging and this is with one or two connected devices. And it doesn't matter what exactly is connected to the signal source - smartphones, tablets, computers or something else. In general, the declared characteristics do not correspond to reality and this is a rather significant minus!

Also in reviews you can read about cases when the battery was charged in some incomprehensible way in 20 minutes, and then the charge disappeared somewhere in exactly the same time. This may be due to an incorrect display of the charge level in the application or on the front of the device.

What if repair is required

There will also be no problem with rebooting the device and factory reset. But if you need to make some more complex repairs, problems may arise with this.

For example, although the battery is removable, getting to it is very problematic. To do this, you will have to disassemble half of the body of the device.

The same goes for the other parts. In addition, this model has already been discontinued and no updates can be found for it.

If you have any problems, it is best to contact the support service on the manufacturer's official website, alcatel-mobile.com.

If you do not find the information you need in the sections of the resource, you can click on the "Call us" button (you can talk to the operator using a headset) or "Ask us" (this is a text chat).

  • beautiful design;
  • small size;
  • high speed of reception and transmission;
  • the ability to use memory cards;
  • stable signal distribution;
  • copes with heavy loads (up to 10 connected devices at the same time);
  • simplicity of initial setup and management.

The cost of the LINK Y850v0 router is about $ 55-60. Based on these data, everyone can independently decide whether to buy such a model.

Full name - Alcatel One Touch Link Y 900, by TCT Mobile (Alcatel), will be sold under the Beeline brand. The most interesting - lTE support Advanced and battery 3 600 mAh. And the dimensions are smaller than that of a router with a battery that is half the capacity.

Dots above "i"

Alcatel One Touch Link Y 900 will be sold exclusively in retail network Beeline, in Moscow starting from August 03 at a price of 5,990 rubles. The kit includes 2 weeks mobile internet "Beeline" (option "Internet package 30 GB") is free. After this period, you can change the Internet package depending on the required traffic volume or continue using, but with the option “Internet package 20 GB. The router is locked to work on the Beeline network.

One SIM card, microSIM format. Impressive specifications with such dimensions, quite a modern filling. Qualcomm MDM9230 processor, support for all LTE, UMTS and GSM bands (FDD-LTE: 800/900/1800/2100/2600 MHz, UMTS: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz) , there is perhaps no support for TDD-LTE. Which is still not used in the Beeline network.

Availability of LTE Advanced Cat. 6 (aggregation of two frequency bands for receiving data) allows us to hope that the router will be able to pull out the maximum from the 4G + network that the network wants and can give in a specific place. The next stage is Cat. 9, but it is not soon in devices of this class. Yes, and such networks are only just beginning to run in separate fragments.

As you can imagine, miracles do not happen, and it was not easy to fit into such dimensions. We donated the screen, the multifunctional control button seemed too narrow and uncomfortable to me. Antennas are only built-in (MIMO), there are no jacks for using external antennas. But the battery is as much as 3,600 mAh and is removable, the power bank function is also provided.

Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac support, 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, the router does not work simultaneously in dual bands. The Wi-Fi signal strength is adjustable (three steps); at maximum power, the coverage area is not much worse than that of a stationary router. Supports simultaneous connection of up to 32 (!) Users, the default setting is 10 connections. The repeater mode, unfortunately, is not provided.

There are no complaints about the radio unit, although the sensitivity in 4G behaves unusually, so to speak. But everything is within normal limits, and the router holds onto the 4G network reliably. Switching 4G / 3G / 2G and vice versa works out well, although the transition from 3G to 4G happens with some slowdown.

Package and design

A neutral white box, complete with documentation, a 2 A charger and a short, coarse connecting cable almost the size of a little finger.

The design is nice, but the router looks a bit plump. This is a feature of the design solution, the model is offered in two versions: with a battery of 1 800 or 3 600 mAh. In the variant with a 1800 mAh battery, a compact, harmonious in all dimensions and stylish box turned out. For the version with a 3 600 mAh battery (the version sold in Russia), they simply made a deep "back trough", without changing anything else. This gives rise to a feeling of some asymmetry in the result.

I remembered Chinese "custom" batteries of increased capacity for smartphones, they were equipped with a deeper back cover, and a large battery also stuck out of the main body. Well, okay, battery capacity is much more important than the aesthetic pleasure of perfect proportions.

Large highlighted rectangles show the signal level of the cellular network, 2G, 3G and 4G indicators are displayed on the side edge. The battery level can only be assessed by changing the color of the LED indicator on the front panel (changes to red when the charge level is less than 20%), on the control web page or in a dedicated smartphone application. Not very convenient, but bearable. Moreover, there is still enough battery for a full day of operation.

Design

Dual Micro USB 3.0 High Speed \u200b\u200bconnector, same as used in external drives.

It is wiser to use the supplied cable, but the usual Micro USB router charges normally, albeit much longer. The downside is that the usual connector in the double socket is almost not fixed, and you need to put the router for charging where you will not accidentally touch it.

A narrow "rocker" of inclusion, WPS, and it is the same - wake up the router from standby mode. The button is not very convenient, and the actuation of pressing is almost not felt, but you can get used to it.

There is nothing particularly interesting inside. Sockets for MicroSIM and a memory card of a very ancient model, with a sliding shutter-lock. I don't think they were saving a penny, rather, they were fighting for millimeters of space.

Here, compare the dimensions with the MegaFon MR300-1 router of about the same class and a 3,000 mAh battery, the thickness of the case is the same for both devices.

Control

It is impossible to "control" the router directly from the case, just turn it on and off. You can change modes and configure from a computer in the standard way through the home page 192.168.1.1. The settings menu is detailed in the review of the Beeline ZTE MF90 router. Since then, there have been some improvements and improvements, but they were described in the analysis of the previous version of the Alcatel router, and there is no point in repeating a third time.

As with the previous Alcatel Y850 router from Beeline, the same effect of the inoperability of the settings page in the Firefox browser, now version 39.0: the password is entered once, the interface is loaded for a long time and with malfunctions, menu transitions do not always work. It's good that I immediately remembered this phenomenon and quickly climbed into Internet Explorer, in which everything worked fine. Android also works in the stock browser.

It is possible to either select the "Auto" mode, or fix the device to work in one specific standard. As already written, there is wi-Fi support IEEE 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, but the router does not work simultaneously in dual bands. On the management page I could not find a section with statistics of traffic consumed, perhaps I did not search well enough.

There is a perfectly workable app on Google Play. Moreover, now there are two of them with the same name "WiFi Smart Link". If you believe the descriptions, one of them is universal, and the second is strictly for the Y858 model. As expected, our Y900 did not see the universal application, but a separate version for Y858 worked fine with the device. A localized Russian-language version was promised by the end of July. In the application, you can watch traffic and set a monthly rate with a notification, but, for example, it is impossible to switch Wi-Fi bands or network standards. There is no perfection in the world, alas.

In order not to read the descriptions on english language, you can focus on the color of the icon in Google Play, the required version of the application is slightly darker.

At the first wired connection to the computer, the router did not want to "pretend" to be an Ethernet connection (RNDIS); I had to run the installer from the router's memory. Then everything worked well. The connecting cable, of course, is depressing with its rigidity and less than 60 cm in length.

Impressions from work

The sensitivity question was a little intriguing. On the one hand, "iron" grip, retention of the 4G network and decent signal strength indicators for one operator. In a place where not every device finds this network at all. On the other hand, the indication of a clearly weak signal of another operator in the place where all other 4G devices have no problems, "a lot of sticks" and everything works fine. There is a suspicion that different indications are somehow connected with LTE Advanced, which the router clings to in one network, but does not find it in another.

There are no complaints about the speed characteristics. Tried with two other LTE-A routers, the results are comparable. I won't say that the Alcatel Y900 is noticeably better, but I didn't see any obvious failures either. That, taking into account the size of the device, can be considered a very good result of speed measurements.

The "sore spot" of such devices is switching between networks of different standards, there are freezes while moving. I did not see any obvious problems with Alcatel Y900, including during trips to the subway. Normally "flips" between 2G-3G-4G and vice versa. But there is some "thoughtfulness" (a few seconds) when switching "up". Not a defect, but I would say this: for use in a driving car, this is not the best option.

The device is clearly not everything is perfect either with a temperature sensor or with ventilation. A couple of times in the heat in the pocket of my bag, my router turned off for no apparent reason. At the same time, to the touch, I would not call it downright "hot". Yes, it was hot, but others continued to work at higher (again to the touch) body temperatures. Overly oversized protection? May be. Nothing criminal, especially for Russian climatic conditions, but I advise you to take note.

The Wi-Fi module is pretty good. In the maximum power mode, the coverage is comparable to that of routers with external antennas, in the medium mode (default setting) it corresponds to the performance of most pocket routers. Low power mode - roughly an Android smartphone in hotspot mode. The default average power is optimal for most scenarios, but it's good that the regulation is provided.

One of the smartphones saw a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network in the literal sense of the word twice a third. I switched the router from "Auto" mode to manual channel selection, and everything worked without any complaints. Perhaps a specific smartphone is to blame.

Summary

A modern machine with good performance. LTE Advanced cat. 6, battery 3 600 mAh, Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac with 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Up to 32 concurrent connections. There is no display and the controls are not as comfortable as we would like. But the price is not scary, the equivalent of $ 100 for this entire "grocery set" in a compact body.
