We start modernization

Even if you only plan to add an additional module without removing what is already installed, the plastic latches still need to be bent to the sides. On iMacs from mid 2007 and later, including the latest aluminum ones, removing memory sticks is slightly different. The photos below (and the first two above) show the 21.5-inch device. Unscrewing three screws and opening the RAM compartment reveals a pair of modules covered with a pair of flexible tabs made of film-like material.

They are easily removed (just pry with a screwdriver or nails, if any, and pull towards you), providing access to the memory strips, but that's not all.

You need to firmly take the tongue with your fingers and pull it towards you. I don’t know how in other copies, but in what I had the good fortune to disassemble, I had to make significant efforts. There were even fears that the tongue would simply come off, but this did not happen. With a light click, the memory bar slid out a couple of millimeters from its slot.

Then it can be easily removed with your fingers. As you can see, this is a regular DDR3 PC8500 module manufactured by Samsung. There is no magic and not even an apple logo.
