Short description:

Every year on September 3, Russia celebrates the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism. This memorable date of Russia was established in 2005 by the federal law "On the Days of Military Glory of Russia" and is associated with the tragic events in Beslan (North Ossetia, September 1-3, 2004), when militants seized one of the city's schools. As a result of the terrorist attack in school number 1, more than three hundred people died, including more than 150 children.

Terrorist act in Beslan (September 1-3, 2004) September 3 - the day of solidarity in the fight against terrorism Prepared by Vybornova I.A., teacher of history and social studies, MBOU secondary school No. 8, Kstovo

The hostage-taking at school No. 1 in the city of Beslan (North Ossetia), committed by terrorists on the morning of September 1, 2004, during a solemn assembly dedicated to the beginning of the school year, is one of the worst terrorist attacks in the history of mankind. For two and a half days, the terrorists held more than 1,100 hostages in the school building. http://famouspeople.ucoz.ru/news/10_let_tragedii_v_beslane/2014-09-02-415

September 1. 9:05 A group of 32 terrorists in two cars drove into the courtyard of Beslan secondary school No. 1, where a solemn assembly dedicated to the Day of Knowledge was taking place at that time. Shooting from machine guns, the terrorists surrounded the people gathered in the yard and drove them into the school building, some managed to leave the school grounds. Twenty students and school staff who had taken refuge in the boiler room managed to free themselves through a breach in the wall. http://rusidea.org/?a=25090113

Ira Gurieva recalls: (September 1, 2004 she moved to the second grade) “... We went to the line, lined up. I was standing behind, I couldn't see anything. Turned on the music. Suddenly, at some point, the music turns off, shooting starts, some kind of fuss. Everyone ran to the school, me too. For a very long time they were looking for the key to the doors, no one could open these doors. And there was a very terrible crush ... At some point, I turned back and saw people in camouflage with machine guns. But I didn't know who it was. It didn't fit in my head that this could be. The terrorists were already angry, they started shooting at everyone's feet ... We went into the school, everyone scattered around the building, who went where. I also ran somewhere, ran into the classroom, and everyone who was in the class sat under their desks and shouted. The terrorist came in and said: everyone get out of here… They drove us to the gym…” http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

Ilona Gazdanova recalls: (September 1, 2004 she moved to the second grade) “... We were driven into the hall. One man was shot on the very first day… All windows and doors were walled up. In all classes, desks and chairs were piled up to the windows so that nothing could be seen, and so on the entire perimeter of the school. Men were used for this work. Then many of them were killed. They were killed in the same class, thrown out from the second floor, they fell down. I experienced a very deep shock, but behaved with restraint, because I understood that throwing a tantrum is dangerous. I had to hold back for myself, for my mother, although it was very difficult. Some of the terrorists were sitting on the roof, others were in the building. They were everywhere. Almost immediately they began to hang bombs, from one basketball hoop to another ... "

September 1. 9:25 About 1,100 people were taken hostage, most of them were driven to the gym. Two hostages are killed. The terrorists mined the hall. Most of the hostages were driven into the main gym, the rest ended up in the gym, showers and dining room. Having driven people into the building, the terrorists forced everyone to hand over their photo and video equipment and telephones. After that, the hostages were forced to barricade the exits and windows. The glass was ordered to be broken so that the security forces could not use the gas.

September 1. 11:00–11:30 Mufti of North Ossetia R.I. Valgasov and FSB representative V.G. The Zangions headed towards the school with a white flag. The terrorists fired on them, forcing them to return. Through the hostage, the terrorists handed over a note in which they stated that they would negotiate only with the President of North Ossetia Alexander Dzasokhov, the President of Ingushetia Murat Zyazikov and the children's doctor Leonid Roshal. The forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs created two lines of cordon around the school, blocking the area. Residents were evacuated from nearby houses.

September 1. 12:25–12:30 The terrorists handed over a video cassette recording what was happening at the school, as well as a note demanding the release of the militants from the Russian prison. Negotiations began with the terrorists. September 1. 13:20 - 13:30 The terrorists handed over another note, which contained obviously impossible demands - to withdraw Russian troops from Chechnya, to recognize the independence of Ichkeria. In the windows of the school, children were exposed by the militants in order to avoid the storming of the building by special forces.

September 1. 16:00–16:30 An explosion and shots were heard in the school building. The explosion killed 5 or 6 hostages. The first telephone contact with the terrorists. The terrorists reaffirmed their previous demands and outlined the rules for the violation of which the hostages would be shot. September 1. 17:00–17:30 Terrorists fired indiscriminately from machine guns and grenade launchers on the territory adjacent to the school. The terrorists threw several bodies of the killed hostages out of the school window.

September 1. 17:30–18:00 Six hostages managed to escape. September 1. 20.00-21.00 Leonid Roshal arrived in Beslan. Negotiations on the transfer of provisions and medicines to the hostages were unsuccessful, as the militants considered that the water and medicines might contain psychotropic substances.

2 September. 7:40 The militants were not allowed to replace the child hostages with adults. 10:00–12:00 Mikhail Gutseriev, president of the RussNeft company, got in touch with the terrorists. He offered money in exchange for the hostages. The terrorists rejected this offer. 12:00–13:00 Terrorists phoned Chairman of the North Ossetian Parliament T.D. Mamsurov. He talked to his son, who was among the hostages.

Nadezhda Ilyinichna Tsaloeva-Gurieva recalls: (teacher of history in grades 5-7) “...They [terrorists] perfectly understood who they were, why they had come, what attitude they had. An elementary school kid runs after Ali, one of their gang leaders, and says, "Uncle, can I go out for a drink?" He turns to him and says: “What kind of uncle am I to you? I am a bandit and a terrorist, I have come to kill you!” […] Or another case. The mother of one boy, a second-grader, was in very poor condition, he had five rubles. He took out this coin, hands it to the terrorist and says: “Take it, uncle, let my mother go, you see how bad she is.” And he was proud of him: “Do you know how many of these I have at home?”[…] On September 2, we already had dead children. Not because they were shot. One girl died from a diabetic coma. The boy died of a massive heart attack in his mother's arms…” http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

2 September. 16:00 Ruslan Aushev, the former president of Ingushetia, entered the school building, with whom the terrorists had previously agreed to negotiate. The leader of the terrorists, Rasul Khuchbarov, handed him a note addressed to the President of Russia, allegedly from Shamil Basayev, demanding the withdrawal of troops from Chechnya and granting it full sovereignty. As a result of negotiations with Aushev, 26 hostages (mothers with children under 2 years old) were released. An agreement was reached on the removal of the bodies of the murdered hostages.

Ira Gurieva recalls: (September 1, 2004 she moved to the second grade) “... The terrorists were constantly angry that there was such noise in the hall, everyone was talking, crying. They hit the floor with rifle butts and fired into the air to keep everyone quiet. On the first day and the first half of the second day we were still afraid of them. But then no one paid attention to the threats, it was all the same. There was one desire: that we get out of here. Alive, dead - just to end it. On the second day, we were transferred to another room, to the gym. It was very cool there. But we were not allowed to go to the toilet. They didn't let us drink water, but somehow we still managed to get there. It was already unbearable to sit, everything hurt. They urinated under themselves... I remember a little boy who died. He was very young, well, two or three years old. And he was constantly thirsty, constantly whining, crying...” http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

September 3rd. 12:40 The terrorists allowed the employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations to drive by car to the school to carry out the bodies of the killed hostages. September 3rd. 13:03–13:05 Two powerful explosions sounded in the sports hall. The terrorists opened fire on the employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Lavrent Perisaev recalls: (head of the search and rescue unit of the Ministry of Emergency Situations) “... At about 12:45 on the 3rd, our chief drove up. I was the unit commander, and he told me to determine two who would go to pull out the bodies of the dead. The militants at the school shot several people, including an employee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and a fire inspector. The heat was intense and bodies were thrown out the windows. There was an agreement that they give the bodies, and we can pick them up. On their part, demands were put forward that only the Ministry of Emergency Situations could take away - no security officials. While everything was being decided, 15 minutes passed, and at about 13.05 explosions thundered. Everyone was alert, the shooting began. They were shooting from all sides. As soon as the shooting started, all the hostages rushed to escape from the school through the windows. Dehydrated children jumped out, completely naked, in their underwear, some in T-shirts, bloody, dirty, ran out of the school. Children and adults ran as best they could, and they were fired upon. Many were killed in the back. http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

September 3rd. 13:05–13:25 The surviving hostages began to run out of the gym through the opening formed after the explosions. The soldiers rushed to carry people out of the building under the indiscriminate incessant enemy fire. The roof of the school collapsed. The terrorists fired on those fleeing and herded the remaining hostages into the dining room. Some of the hostages ended up in the physical education teacher's room, near the exit from the gym. A physical education teacher snatched a machine gun from one of the militants, but he killed the 74-year-old teacher.

Ira Gurieva recalls: (September 1, 2004 she moved to the second grade) “...By mistake we were taken to the wrong office, and it was a nightmare there. Dead, burnt people, blood. I remember that at that time I was very scared, I closed my eyes so as not to see it. And near the window, our physical instructor, Ivan Konstantinovich, fought with the terrorist, snatched a machine gun from him, and the terrorist shot him. In the corridor and the dining room, too, everyone was already dead. There was a lot of broken glass on the floor. The terrorists told the children to stand on the windows and shout: "Don't shoot, there are children!" There were bars on the windows in the dining room, and one of them moved away from the wall. Our other fizruk, who remained alive, took it off the windowsill… Below we saw a helmet, apparently from a commando, and everyone started jumping out. I stood ... and was afraid to jump ... my mother pushed me out, because a terrorist came into the dining room and fired a machine-gun burst.

September 3rd. 13:10 The operational headquarters decided to start a military operation. The snipers of the reconnaissance and observation group opened fire on the destruction of the firing points of the terrorists in order to cover the spontaneous evacuation of the hostages. Corridors have been created for the hostages to enter the safe zone and beyond the cordon. There are four filtration groups of officers from the District Department of Internal Affairs and OMON to control the passage of hostages.

Alexander Betin recalls: (lieutenant colonel, fighter of group "A" - "Alpha") On September 2 and 3, special forces trained in a similar school building. At 13:05, a command was suddenly received to return to the base urgently. “On the way, we learned that two powerful explosions had taken place in the gym in succession, resulting in a partial collapse of the roof. According to one version, the adhesive tape with which the explosive was attached to the basketball basket could not withstand the intense heat. He pulled away, after which an explosion occurred from the impact. The "duty" militant's nerves could not stand it, and he let go of his foot from the pedal - after which the second series of explosions began. The hostages, who could, began to jump out of the windows and run out through the front door into the school yard. The terrorists opened fire on them with machine guns and grenade launchers. Then the order was given to the FSB special forces to start the operation ... ”http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

Alexander Betin recalls: (lieutenant colonel, fighter of group "A" - "Alpha") There was actually nowhere to hide from the shots. Open field and all. We were supposed to drive an armored personnel carrier into the courtyard of the school to the gym, but at the last moment the soldier-driver turned a little to the side and drove into the trees. We were at the level of the branches, nothing was visible. When I jumped down, I saw that there were no more comrades in arms ... Behind the house, twenty steps away, there were people. When the first explosions occurred, there was confusion, local residents, trying to help the hostages who had broken through, rushed to the gym. I lay down, they shouted to me: "Run away from there, a sniper is working in that area." As it turned out later, Dima Razumovsky from Vympel was killed about fifteen meters from this site. Seeing ahead of our guys, he rushed after him. I remember we stood near the wall, we didn’t go into the courtyard, we hid. There was massive shelling, grenade launchers worked, everything exploded. And two of us had already gone ahead and lay down in the basement opposite the gym. Here Vitaly Nikolaevich comes running, shouting: “What, stand up, come on after me!” And we rushed forward after the commander. http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

Memo 1. How not to become a victim of a terrorist attack? Be careful; pay attention to strangers; feel free to report it to the elders if something seems suspicious to you. Do not touch ownerless bags, packages, bundles; do not pick up any things, even valuable ones: a booby trap can be disguised as a toy, pen, mobile phone, etc.

Memo 1. How not to become a victim of a terrorist attack? Report suspicious items to the nearest police station or patrol officers. Watch for ownerless premises, attics, basements. If possible, avoid large crowds where the likelihood of a terrorist attack increases.

Memo 2. How to behave in hostages? Remember the main thing - the goal is to stay alive. Pull yourself together as quickly as possible, suppress your panic with all your might and try to calm down. Prepare for moral, physical and emotional challenges. Speak in a calm, even voice.

Memo 2. How to behave in hostages? In no case should actions be allowed that can provoke the attackers to use weapons and lead to human casualties. To endure deprivation, insults and humiliation without challenge or objection. Save money and stay strong.

Memo 2. How to behave in hostages? Don't do anything, ask permission. Move less. Remember that everything necessary and possible is being done for your release.
