The main reason, the core of this tragedy, is the restlessness of the soul of a person who does not see in everything that is happening around the meaning that could illuminate and fill life - and therefore intolerably suffering.

"Polotnyany Zavod", although it is presented by the magazine as a story, is nevertheless more similar to a cycle of short stories, in which the most valuable and most interesting are dream immersions in another time, mainly Soviet with some excursions further into the depths, and this time, showing through the consciousness of this or that hero and the reality displacing it is the main character of the cycle. I would call this technique “prose virtualization”. Moreover, Vladimir Berezin sometimes succeeds in a very subtle and complex: drawing plots from the so-called mass literature (deftly imposed on an inexperienced reader by a pragmatic publisher) about witchcraft, about a girl's love for a robot, about selling a soul, and so on, he turns them into good prose, when the next his short story can no longer be read as an entertaining story for lovely housewives, but as a parable that requires, as if in a computer quest, its own key to solve, and there can be several keys at different levels of reading. In "Polotnyanoy Zavod" he is especially distinguished by the skill, depth and multi-layered image of the authorized, well-fed and smooth - and the time is blockade, Leningrad! - short story "Tamarisk", but just "Linen Factory", "Spoilage" and "Dreams" are more unambiguous in meaning, depth and versatility of "Tamarisk" are deprived ... "

The year, when, once again, in the middle of the necessary reading, you do not have time to read even a small fraction of book novelties, I would like to call it a good one.
The trend that had to be noted in the last year's report continued. Just as we have almost learned how to shoot not only an art house, but also a strong commercial movie, for which the blue screen does not blush, so decent literature continues to come out not for a railway station pub and a non-Michelin-starred restaurant. "The City of Brezhnev" by Shamil Idiatullin and "Patriot" by Andrey Rubanov, "The Feast of Extra Eagles" by Alexander Bushkovsky and "Bare Flame" by Dmitry Novikov, just to name a few.
Rather, the new Pelevin also delighted and - apart from the usual satirical fixation of topicality - marked, it seems, a new trend. Almost real cyberpunk (although a couple from the program-hero and a living heroine reminded me too much of a couple from "SNUFF" - the hero and his robot-lover) - how much it is possible even in the conditions of such a rapidly realizing future - was, of course, quite here and now.
IPhuck 10 is a high-quality and caustic satire on the future (but very soon) delights of all evils. Capital (indeed, how much you can sell people every year on a new phone model, if you can introduce a fashion for gadgets for individual sex, backing up sales of natural sex victimization and a couple of pandemics transmitted by this way), globalized political correctness (if you don't want to listen to targeted individualized, pronounced in a gender-neutral voice, advertising in Uber, if you please pay social tax), feminism and its criticism (“Patriarchal white man-seralnik allows a woman to feminism solely in order to laugh at her idiocy and increase his pleasure”), liberalism, and so on. And all this flaming modernity is reduced in the novel not only to the usual games around and around Buddhism, but also, interestingly, the idea of \u200b\u200ba monotheistic God appears.
At the same time, air defense books, due to their regular annuality, more and more migrate from the traditional novel ("Chapaev and Void") to some new genre with strong features of a post-report on the most urgent. Perhaps this is not only a trend for articles by literary scholars on the topic of genre metamorphoses of the novel form, but also what we will read in the near future. After all, Copeland and Palahniuk, Beigbeder and Houellebecq have been writing about the same not the first five-year plan ...
"The Tsar ordered to hang you" by Lena Eltang at the end of the year made a shock pandan to last year's "Appendix" by Alexandra Petrova. The prose of both books is very foreign (Portugal and Italy as a setting), very European, graceful and intricate in a baroque way.
Books of real stylists also came out - here you cannot miss the small circulation, as always in recent years, and the posthumous book of Victor Ivaniv "The End of Pokemar".
We were reached by translations of ancient exhibits - "The Golden Legend" by Jacob Voraginsky and "Labyrinths" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.
There were also books outside the framework, the translation of which can easily be carried out according to the calculated line of "feat": these are "Manga" by Hokusai (translated by Eugene Steiner), "Cantos" by Ezra Pound (translated by Andrey Bronnikov) and "Poppy and Memory" by Paul Celan (translated by Alyosha Prokopyev).
And the fact that I have obviously not read a lot, did not name or simply forget now, testifies to the premature of calling for the commemoration.

1. The main event for me was, of course, the August St. Petersburg fantastic assembly. We, the organizers, managed to bring George Martin to Russia! And none of us even had to sell a kidney for that. But it's not just the figure of the guest of honor. Such events in our country are usually attributed to the department of pop culture, in "decent houses" they do not talk about it. But the Assembly, it seems to me, marks a much more complex and profound process in literature. When George Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, and editor-in-chief of Novy Mir, Andrei Vasilevsky, present New Horizons, the main and only prize for non-conformist fiction in our country, to Eduard Verkin at the closing of the Assembly, you understand that you are witnessing a breakdown of paradigms ... The shift of tectonic layers is quiet, imperceptible, inevitable. You can directly hear the templates bursting at the seams, and it's just wonderful.
2. Calling “June” by Dmitry Bykov, “iPhuck 10” by Viktor Pelevin or “Zahkhok” by Vladimir Medvedev is the easiest, but it would be too obvious and banal. I will mention two excellent translated novels: Islanders by Christopher Priest and The World That Perished by Nick Harkway. The first book is a convoluted story of the fictional Dreaming Archipelago full of allusions and innuendo, a meditative "magical realism" in British style. The second is post-apocalyptic, powerful, emotionally rich, with lyrical lining and socio-philosophical pathos. By the way, Nick Harquay is the son of John Le Carré - but he remains a completely independent and even original prose writer.
The most interesting Russian-language debut is "Farbrika", a collection of fantastic and absurd stories by the author, hiding under the pseudonym K.A. Terin. Unfortunately, the book was published in 1000 copies, it is easier to find it in electronic form than “in paper”. What else? An amazing project started this fall in St. Petersburg: a thirty-three-volume complete academic collection of works by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky in a hardcover. With variants and drafts, diaries, letters, journalism - all in an adult way, seriously, without discounts on the "frivolous genre". These books are not so much for fans of science fiction - the canonical corpus of the Sturgatskys' texts is constantly being republished. But for researchers of Soviet literature in the second half of the 20th century, this is an invaluable source. There is a lot of curious criticism, from the monograph "You Can't Learn to Read" by Maria Litovskaya and Irina Savkina and "Poetics of a Detective" by Pyotr Moiseyev to film studies with a bias in cultural studies, "Shades of Russian" by Anton Dolin and "Quentin Tarantino Universe" by Alexander Pavlov. And these are only Russian-language books, I do not consider translated literature. Another thing is that I will not dare to highlight something important here, the most important thing: the continent of modern literature is too large, the landscape is too bizarre for one author to be able to look over it entirely with an eagle's gaze.
3. But there is tension with new names. The same Harkuei, after “The World That Has Gone”, released three more novels, received several prestigious awards, and visited Russia at “Non-fiction” - those who read English know him well. The aforementioned K.A. Terina has been publishing stories in collections and anthologies for several decades. It seems to me that fully formed writers rarely come out of nowhere - maybe once a decade, or even less often. As a rule, we see a gradual, gradual increase in skill. If we follow the literary process, of course - at least half an eye.

1. To be honest, I find it a little difficult to answer this question in the context of Russian-language literature, although in the past year several interesting writers have published books. But perhaps the most significant literary event of 2017 for me was the award of the Nobel Prize to Kazuo Ishiguro.
2. In the past year, two books by Alexander Melikhov were published: "Frozen Echo" and "Grounding". Melikhov is generally an amazing writer who, like no one else, knows how, on the one hand, without inappropriate irony, and on the other, without inappropriate pathos, to talk about real human suffering, about real love, real death and real hope, and it is always difficult to read his texts, but after reading, the surrounding reality begins to look somehow different: as one of my acquaintances says, "as if my mother washed and wiped everything with a cloth."
A book of prose has been published by my favorite poet Alla Gorbunova - "Things and Uzhi". When the Novy Mir magazine began publishing Gorbunova's prose four years ago, I was worried that this prose would not be accepted, that it would seem too unusual, strange, so the publication of Things and Gorges is a special joy for me. These are such short visionary stories, sometimes a little creepy, sometimes very funny, in some way reminiscent of the short prose of Kafka, and in some way - the prose of Venedikt Erofeev, but most of all - himself. “Things made from mind are different from things made from matter in their history. The history of things made of matter is the history of matter and the master, the machine and the counter. The history of things made from the mind is the history of the imagination. These two stories run in parallel, but sometimes converge. For convenience, we will designate things from the substance as things, and things from the mind as gables. In every thing, there is at least a little, but there is always a gorge. There is always a history of imagination in the history of matter ”(“ Ushchi ”).
I liked the book “Kill Bobrykin” by Alexandra Nikolaenko - a great tragic poem in prose, written with talent, in one breath, and I am glad that this book received the Russian Booker Prize this year, albeit on the long list and on the list there were other excellent books as well. But, as it seems to me, one should be especially happy about Alexandra Nikolaenko's novel, because it is an outstanding text from the point of view of style, language renewal, and it must be present in the modern, and not only in the modern literary space.
I also hope that next year the novel "Garlic" by the St. Petersburg prose writer Daniel Orlov will be published: this year the chapters from it and the big story "Miner's Day" were published in the magazines "October" and "Druzhba Narodov". I read a novel in manuscript - this is very strong, real prose, which you cannot pass by. Therefore, as they say, I will “keep my fists” so that next year I have the opportunity to call this book a “literary event”.
3. This year I came across a book by Dmitry Filippov "In This World" - I think for the majority this name will be new, although Dmitry's texts have long been published in thick literary magazines. Several years ago I read his collection Three Times of Solitude and then I thought that it was good prose, but maybe a little naive and rough. And now, six years later, Dmitry published a new book in which he, as they say, continues to bend his line, and the book turned out to be quite unusual for modern literature as a whole, because in modern literature there is very little faith in a person, and very little is said simply , but strongly - so that the reader believes that all this is there: faith, and mutual assistance, and the usual human nobility, and true love. This is naturalistic, dense, not at all abstract, not "philological" prose, smelling of earth, blood, sweat, all seasons at once, and at the same time very human. It seems to me that Dmitry Filippov's texts still require serious editorial editing, but I am sure this writer has a literary future.
