The CONTRAST slider adjusts the contrast of the final image, but its work is not very predictable, so I always leave it in the default position - 10.

Also on the panel there is a group of two settings with the word USM. They can increase the sharpness of the photo after applying noise cancellation. The inclusion of these sliders is logical, as the reduction of noise always leads to blurring the image and loss of parts. Increasing the sharpness in this case is able to make this effect slightly, but, in turn, can again take noise or add to the image another problem - visible artifacts. Therefore, I use the USM group not always, only in simple cases where the global increase in sharpness for the entire image does not lead to other difficulties.

Another group of sliders called Colors allows you to work separately with color noise, but in my practice there was not a single case where I wanted to use them. All three sliders are always standing in my middle position - 10. But TURBO and COARSE Noise checkboxes, on the contrary, always turn on. Turbo - speeds up the work of the plugin without visible quality problems, and Coarse Noise effectively removes low-frequency noise in the form of a plurality of small points grouped into stains.

The main problem with noise cancellation is to find a balance when the number of noise is reduced to a normal level and the photo becomes clean, while we must lose the minimum number of parts and achieve a natural appearance of the photo. If simply mindlessly unscrew the sliders to the maximum, then the result is "plastic" image: yes, no noise, but also without details. We will analyze this process on our example.

The first thing I do is disable increasing sharpness (USM Amount \u003d 0). Then, I find the place in the image, where the noise reaches the maximum. This is usually the darkest plot, often at the place of transitioning it to a brighter zone. Now we work only with the sky, and such a plot is located near the horizon in the left side of the photo. The first step is to increase the value of Strength to maximum (20), and smoothness - to a minimum (0). After that, gradually shifting the smoothness slider to the right, you need to stop at the moment when the visible points of noise completely will not completely disappear. For our example, this happened with the value of smoothness \u003d 8.

At this stage, we found the border position of the smoothing parameter, that is, essentially found out the parts size threshold, after which it is considered noise. Now you need to weaken the effect of noise reduction so that the image does not look plastic. A small grain at the same time will still appear, but it will look natural and natural.

To suppress noise in the sky, the Strength value remains quite large (14), but it is normal for clouds without small details. When the noise is suppressing in more detailed parts, the effect of the effect is usually much lower. Please note that TURBO and COARSE Noise checkboxes are included. Apply the settings with the OK button.

Now, if you look at a photo by 100% increase, we see that the sky now looks much cleaner, but the items on ice and snow are hopeless. Let's fix it by limiting the effect of noise cancellation on the sky area. To do this, add to the layer 'nonoise-sky' mask and draw a linear gradient from it white to black, making the lower part of the layer transparent.

Once again, we look at a photo 100% increase:

Now everything is all right. The sky - without noise, and on the snow and the ice returned the details from the original image.

Now we will deal with noise in the detailed part of the photo. Here the approach will be different, since we can not lose a lot of details and strongly screw the value of Strength will not work. It turns out that the strength of the impact should be minimal by definition, but in this case it will not get rid of all noise. The good news is that noises in the image are not evenly distributed. In bright noise zones less, and in dark - more. Therefore, the basic idea of \u200b\u200bcombating noise in areas with high detail is to slightly "soften" an image, make it not so sharp and microcontracted, after which it is limited to the effect of the noise only on dark areas.
