Review Canon EOS M - Mirrorless camera from Canon. Canon DSLRs The Best Canon DSLRs for Hobbyists

I'll start traditionally. Have something to say about Canon EOS M Canon's first interchangeable lens mirrorless camera, introduced in July 2012. I like the little thing - it shoots (in terms of quality) like a SLR, fits in a pocket, can use older EF and EF-S optics and its EF-M optics, more compact, with a short working distance. The same as I expected from the Canon G1X, but not received. In fact, the camera kills two birds with one stone - it can shoot like more serious DSLRs, but, unlike them, it will still fit into your pocket if necessary. Which is perfectly normal in the mirrorless class.

Canon EOS M, EF-M 22mm f/2.0 STM lens and stock EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

Someone considers "all these mirrorless" either the machinations of the devil, or the nonsense of marketers. I believe that the class has the right to life, these cameras sell well, I see many with this kind of equipment. Not everyone needs a tractor to plant potatoes - for some, a walk-behind tractor is enough. Canon EOS M is the same case.

But in an environment unaccustomed to Canon mirrorless professionals, the camera is brain-bending, including due to Canon's pricing policy. EOS M immediately after the announcement caused a lot of controversy in thematic forums, publics and blogs, provoked a predictable ambiguous reaction. With a recommended price of $900 for a kit with a Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM ($800 for a kit with a "pancake" 22mm f/2.0), it is extremely close in price to and , and turns out to be more expensive than the Canon 1100D and , while not being a "reflex camera". It would seem strange, on the one hand, to choose between a DSLR "for the widest range of optics and accessories" and a non-DSLR, which is only a few hundred grams lighter. On the other hand, obviously, playing in the same price range with / this camera can take up much less space in the bag and pull the shoulder much weaker. It even fits in your pocket. It is controlled differently, not with buttons, but on the screen, but it also shoots. And not everyone, I'm sure, is so confused by the possession of the widest fleet of optics, by applying the camera to the eye and other "mirror" subtleties.

The manufacturer is positioning Canon M for "compact upgraders", that is, for owners of all kinds of IXUS and PowerShot, who decided to go higher, into the area of more controlled cameras with a sensor that gives a better picture, the ability to separate the subject from the background with a shallow depth of field (strongly blur background), etc. There are the latest trends in management - on-screen menu, multi-touch. When I first tried it on, I got the impression - this is it, combining an iPhone with a camera.

    The touch screen allows you to focus on any point with one touch; Small size - for traveling light it is the most; raw support.

    This device has a modern design. It is slightly heavier than a soap dish, it is the size of a soap dish, you can always take it with you in your jacket pocket. The video quality is SIGNIFICANTLY better than that of any compact, the picture is beautiful, the color reproduction is excellent. For me, this criterion was decisive in the final choice of apparatus. The quality of pictures (the beauty of the picture) under normal conditions is much better than that of any compact. Some examples of pictures: http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/vadim537/view/714834/?page=0 Possibility of using other Canon lenses through an adapter. The same applies to large outbreaks. (And although I have them, but it kills the whole idea of compactness, therefore, it is unlikely that I will use it). I wrote it myself, .. but for the sake of fun, after all, I bought an adapter :) ... - I did not expect it. Was pleasantly surprised.

    Amazingly high build quality. Excellent color rendering. If there are mini-blotches of blue-green moss on the bark of a tree, then the photo will show exactly these inclusions of blue-green moss. If the beetle has a purple tint on its wings, then you will see this tint in the photo. If the wave is azure and the rays of the purple setting sun pass through it, you will get exactly these rays and this color of the wave in the photo. The photo is of very good quality. Looks great. The touch screen is responsive. The flash has its own batteries. Not stupid with autofocus (it's not fast but accurate). If you take a photo of a mini-twig, then it will focus on it .. Excellent macro photography - it focuses exactly on the flower or bug you wanted to shoot. Portrait mode is great too.

    Excellent build quality, I can’t even believe that it’s plastic, a convenient menu (not like the NEX-5R), it works quickly, everything is familiar, everything is like a Canon DSLR. With the original $150 adapter for EF/EF-S glasses, you can use the entire fleet of Canon optics, while both the stabilizer and autofocus will work. The native 18-55 lens is several times superior to the usual Canon 18-55 bayonet gags, and in all respects. Also pleased with the presence of a hot shoe and a connector for an external microphone, which was so lacking in the NEX. I will not write about the quality of the photo, it is no different from the 650D, the matrices in these cameras are identical.

    High image quality Large sensor High quality materials Convenient menu Compactness with a pancake 22/2 Low cost of the camera and lenses

    2 years ago

    Excellent workmanship of the case, pleasant heaviness in the hands. The small size, especially with a pancake, really fits in a jacket pocket. Full functionality of junior DSLRs, convenient control via touch screen. The menu familiar to the kenonist, those who are familiar with the system can not read the instructions. A good final picture straight from the camera with thoroughbred Ken's color reproduction. Precise working out of automation (WB, metering) Compatibility with Canon Speedlite flashes and the possibility of E-TTL control of a cheap and small flash 90 in the kit. Excellent video quality with continuous, smooth and silent auto! focusing (do not press the shutter button during the video, the device itself points to the selected area), the presence of a built-in stereo microphone and the ability to use an external one. Good optics. 18-55

    2 years ago

    First of all, you pay attention to the excellent workmanship. No backlash, pleasant but not excessive metal heaviness in the hands, tight mount, smooth operation of all buttons and rings on the lenses. Surprisingly good ergonomics for such a small camera. Whale 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 and 22/2 in line with the latest models of Canon's budget optics - good sharpness, good resistance to backlight, quiet autofocus. .

    2 years ago

    Compactness, continuity of EF / EF-S optics, familiar menu, good screen with multi-touch, crop factor x1.6 (for a soap dish), autofocus illumination, Eye-Fi support, low price at the time of the release of the new EOS M2 model

    2 years ago

    I liked the quality of photos, it is not inferior to Canon 7d. The camera is slightly heavier than a home compact.

    2 years ago

    Compact, great image quality, good build quality, very attractive price, hot shoe.

    2 years ago

    No viewfinder, not even an external one;
    Almost 2 lenses are available (17-55 and 22) not needed);
    Non-standard, although convenient, fastening of the strap and the width of the strap itself;
    There is no connector for the remote control;
    Does not display battery percentage.

    2 years ago

    The inconvenience of flexible control and its touchscreen specificity. Here's a couple more adjustment wheels....
    Focus slow? while SNEEP and .... butterflies and birds flew away from the frame. (although focusing on the touchscreen does not take time to recompose the frame)
    The impossibility of auto focusing in case of obstacles in front of the target: for example, branches, fence bars - due to the large spot of the focus area ..
    High price even with the minimum set (except for SONY RX100 from the considered alternatives)

    2 years ago

    You can't carry it with one hand. A mirror is possible, but it is not. Because the DSLR has something to grab onto, while the canon eos m has almost none. You can only take pictures with both hands. That little support on the body - for chickens to laugh, just for show.
    The MAIN disadvantage is that the camera is not at all suitable for "situational" shots. He is NOT FAST. No, no, it is not slower than most soap dishes, but I will give an example. Granny is feeding a squirrel in the park. The squirrel comes down and takes nuts from his hands. On a DSLR with a portrait lens, I would take 30 shots in these seconds (and understanding through the viewfinder whether the squirrel is in focus or not). On eos-m - I took 3 pictures. Yes, one of them came out with dignity, but first he takes a picture ... then he thinks a little ... then he only shows what happened on the screen. And since there is no viewfinder, it’s impossible to understand in focus

    2 years ago

    However, I think that the grip is not very comfortable. I also don’t really like the slight delay between frames (about 0.5-1 second if you turn on photo viewing), the burst shooting speed is slightly lower than that of the NEX-5R, but not critical, well, there are not enough controls, although this is more likely a plus, all the same, the camera is more oriented for non-professional photographers, and so far there is a small park of native EOS M optics, only 3 lenses. I really miss the fifty dollars that I liked so much on the NEX. Although with an adapter you can use everything. Well, for everyone who has a slow autofocus - firmware 2.0.2 solves this problem by 90%. Download from the official site.

    2 years ago

    No viewfinder
    Slow autofocus
    Low battery capacity
    Few lenses
    Accidental clicks on the touchscreen when carrying the included camera
    No built-in flash
    Strong noise at ISO more than 3200
    Not the best exposure control

    2 years ago

    Low battery capacity.
    The absence of a portrait lens in the system. 22/2 even on the open blurs weakly, the usual bokeh is not memorable.
    As mentioned by others, no button and screen lock. It's good that the screen is capacitive and does not work from clothes - you can wear it around your neck.
    Low rate of fire for excellent night portrait and HDR performance. In principle, they work well, but at 8-10fps it would be even better.
    When shooting HDR, only jpeg is written to the card :(

    2 years ago

    There is no button to force the screen off, when carrying the camera on, it is easy to accidentally touch the screen and switch modes, for example, turn on the screen shutter mode and get a few shots of the ground from the level of the lower back, or find out when shooting the next frame that the release delay has turned on.
    The stabilizer at 18-55 sometimes blurs the frame.

    2 years ago

    No viewfinder, not enough protrusion to hold with one hand, weak battery, slow autofocus, access to memory card and batteries from below, noise at medium ISO, few EOS-M lenses, high price at the time of release, no Wi-Fi, no GPS.

    2 years ago

    Unfortunately the battery is weak. In RAW format, it takes 150-160 shots until it is completely discharged.

    2 years ago

    The speed of the autofocus system could be higher, there is no built-in flash, a small selection of native lenses.

Actually, the level of development of the system as a whole can be judged by the quantity and quality of accessories developed for this system, for example, lenses :). Other manufacturers have been creating and bringing to market their mirrorless ‘monsters’ long before Canon (and in our time the game is not for decades, but for months).

Of course, the fleet of optics for cameras with an EF-M mount can be expanded with an adapter and at the same time use all available EF-S and EF lenses (although I saw a list somewhere with restrictions on the use of some rare lenses).

So far, there are only 2 cameras with an EF-M mount: Canon EOS M (from this review) and Canon EOS M2, introduced in the fall of 2013.

Like most mirrorless cameras, the Canon EOS M is interesting because of its large APS-C format sensor, which allows you to create good image quality, no worse than modern SLR cameras. Roughly speaking, the camera uses a sensor taken from a SLR camera, and later used in Canon EOS. The camera takes pictures at a maximum size of 5184 × 3456 (18 MP).

The image quality is very similar to what can be obtained with SLR cameras and .

The maximum burst speed is 4.3 frames per second, the burst speed drops seriously with different auto focus settings. the camera is small, on average 4-5 RAW photos and about 12 JPEG photos are placed in the buffer. If you use additional functions that allow you to correct lens imperfections and improve image quality, then it sags a lot when shooting in JPEG. The camera can automatically correct lens vignetting and chromatic aberrations.

The shutter of the camera is mechanical, however, with only one curtain. During shooting, the electronic first curtain is used. There is a slight shutter lag when shooting. The shutter, compared to many other cameras, is very quiet :). If you allow the shutter release without a lens in the menu, then you can use any manual optics with the camera, for which there is an adapter for the Canon EOS-M mount. For precise focusing, you can magnify the selected area of the image. With manual lenses, metering and shooting in aperture priority mode are available.

The camera is very well assembled, the body is made of metal alloy. The camera together with the battery weighs 300 grams and in the hands it feels like a well-made device.

I would say that the basis of the camera is a 3-inch display with 1.040.000 dots. A similar display is also available for models, and (for the latter, it is also rotary). Almost all control is via the display. Multi-touch touch display. There are very few controls on the camera itself and everything, even the most basic settings, is easiest to set using the display. The control joystick is very tiny and not always convenient to use. The joystick ring rotates in a circle, while shooting, you can use the joystick to quickly access some important functions.

On the one hand, controlling the camera via the touch screen is a godsend for novice users who can easily switch from a mobile phone with a touch control to a camera with a touch control. But to me, accustomed to quick access using dedicated controls, setting up the camera using the sensor seemed extremely slow and inconvenient (especially in cold weather, when the sensor does not accept control when wearing gloves). If we abstract away and remember that the camera is designed for the “point and shoot” shooting mode, then the control, due to the touch screen, is performed at the highest level and beginners who have come to the world of digital photography should be very pleased with it :).

The Canon EOS M can shoot full HD 1920*1080 30p video with stereo sound. You can choose different combinations of frame size and quality. The video mode is selected by the main command dial on the top of the camera. There are two options for video mode - automatic and manual. When recording video in manual mode, you can control all the basic recording parameters - ISO, shutter speed, aperture and advanced settings, by type of Picture Style mode, etc.

The camera has a standard stereo microphone jack, as well as an HDMI output and a USB 2.0 port. Here is a link to a video from the owner of the lens.

Canon EOS M with two adapters and a lens

The camera uses Hybrid AF (exactly the same as in Live View). Auto focus speed is the main problem with this camera. The camera focuses noticeably slower than other mirrorless cameras, very often makes mistakes in focusing, sometimes it cannot focus on the selected object at all, even if focusing is selected using one specific zone. Objects in motion track very poorly. I can’t say that focusing is generally helpless, but I would like better performance. And this is when using native lenses, with an EF-M mount and an STM focusing motor!

In general, the Canon EOS M is a small camera, externally, and in terms of the convenience of working with it, very similar to modern digital point-and-shoot cameras. Even the silvery sticker with the main features of the camera looks very similar to those on soap dishes (similar stickers are also glued to laptop cases, which pretty annoys me). The camera's battery can withstand about 200 photos on a single charge (this is very small compared to SLR cameras). I also liked the strap, which can be quickly put on and removed from the camera straps. The strap has small clips for fast clamping on the camera.

In the middle, the adapter is made in the form of a tapering stepped shaft, which avoids unnecessary glare and re-reflections of rays. By the way, this adapter design confirms that the Canon EF-M mount will not expand for full-length lenses :(,

The tiny front element of the Canon Lens EF-M 22mm 1:2 STM

Canon Lens EF-M 22mm 1:2 STM is a very small and cute pancake lens. Despite its size, and it weighs only 105 grams, the lens has a large maximum aperture of F / 2.0. And to everything else, it uses tiny filters with a diameter of 43 mm. At first, it even seems that filters are not designed for this lens at all.

The lens uses a new focusing technology STM - ST epper M otor - stepper motor or focusing stepper motor. STM was supposed to improve the quality of focusing when shooting video, paying special attention to smooth focusing. Focusing is really smooth, fast, but when focusing (both manual and automatic), the lens makes noise, the nature of the noise resembles the hum of a transformer. Similar noise can be observed with a pancake reflex lens. Noise disappears only if you rotate the focus ring very, very slowly.

Canon Lens EF-M 22mm 1:2 STM uses an electronic focus ring. The ring is quite comfortable, but its serrated protrusions are not rubberized. There is no focus mode switch on the lens, to switch to manual focus mode you need to use the camera menu. In manual focus mode, to move the lens from focus to infinity to MDF, you need to rotate the ring 360 degrees. The focus ring rotates in any direction without restrictions. There is an FTM-mode - Full Time Manual Focusing (continuous manual focusing), however, which only works if the AF + MF mode is selected on the camera and only after the camera has focused. During focusing, the front lens does not rotate, only the trunk lengthens. The minimum focusing distance is only 15cm and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:4.8.

The lens is well assembled (despite being made in Taiwan), with a metal mount. There is only a mark on the lens for connecting to the camera. There are no grooves for the hood, it must be screwed in instead of or over the light filter. The hood is not included.

The diaphragm consists of seven rounded blades and closes to f / 22. Nuts () are still traced on covered diaphragms in the blur zone.

Peculiarity: during power on and power off, while the battery cover is closed (even if the memory card without battery is removed), and during attachment to the camera, the lens is initialized. When turned on, the lens protrudes its trunk, focusing in a few meters. When turned off, the lens hides its trunk, and it is clear that the trunk drives into the lens body much deeper than when focusing on infinity. This means that the lens has a special 'parking' of the trunk, which allows you to reduce its size during transportation. It's a little annoying that when the camera is off, if you press the image review button, the lens will also initialize.

The optical scheme of the lens consists of 7 elements in 6 groups, one element is aspherical.

The lens is quite sharp at F / 2.0 even at the edges of the frame. Gives good contrast, weak distortion, present, but quite expected. In backlight, it can catch glare (). In general, it turned out to be a nice 'baby' for a wide range of tasks. The EGF of the lens is 35 mm, which, in turn, is something between a wide-angle and a standard lens. With such a lens, you can shoot almost anything :).

Canon EF-M 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 IS STM - the most simplified lens for a simplified camera :).

The optical scheme of the lens consists of 13 elements in 11 groups, 3 elements are aspherical (well, at least they didn’t save on this).

Canon EF-M 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 IS STM holds backlight well, only if you drive a very bright object into the frame, for example, the sun, you can get glare. At 18 mm, quite a strong distortion is noticeable. On the Canon EOS M, distortion is not automatically corrected. The lens suffers from slight chromatic aberrations. Like most similar lenses, it is not the sharpest at open apertures, but everything is in order with contrast. In general, the Canon EF-M 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 IS STM is a good whale lens, but it is still far from good.

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will definitely answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. For the selection of photographic equipment, I recommend large catalogs, such as E-katalog. Many little things for photos can be found on Aliexpress.
Personal experience

I confess that during the work I did not feel any enthusiasm from any of the lenses, nor from the camera as a whole. Everything is too truncated, picking the menu for the sake of turning on an elementary function infuriates. The camera itself is not very responsive to control. For lenses, the FTM mode does not work at all in a bad way. Adding here not the most successful focus - I would not look at this camera at all :(. But, given that this camera was apparently created not for photographers, but for ordinary amateur photographers, it has the right to life, and you can squeeze high quality photos.

The EOS M system camera was presented at the New Gadgets Show in London back in June 2012. The Japanese company that makes digital cameras and other imaging products, Cannon, has made this new gadget the first in its lineup and the last compared to its big competitors. For example, cameras of this class were already on sale from Nikon (Nikon 1), Panasonic (Lumix G), Samsung (NXT), Sony (NEX series of photo gadgets) and other lesser-known brands. Thus, Canon also decided to take this missed class of cameras, because they are very popular for lovers of good photography with a compact size of the device, for example, among tourists.

Now a little decoding of the name of this camera - EOS M. Who does not know, EOS stands for Electro-Optical System in English - this is Canon's line of 35 mm cameras, both autofocus film and digital SLR. And the EOS M is the latest addition to this series of cameras that features a mirrorless digital camera. Where the letter "M" from the English word "Mirrorless" is translated as "Mirrorless". She has interchangeable optics with an EF-M mount, which will require a new class of optics, which are still very few on sale, or rather, the choice consists of only two: EF-M 18-55 mm (f / 3.5-5.6 IS STM) and EF-M 22mm (f/2 STM). Although using the EF-EOS M adapter, you can combine this camera with an EF-S lens.

If we discard a small minus of this device regarding the mount, then we can highlight its positive side. For example, the Canon EOS M is equipped with a DIGIC 5 processor, which is borrowed from the EOS 650D camera, an APS-C sensor, hybrid autofocus, a large range for selecting an important ISO parameter, and will also be able to please the 3-inch touch screen with an oleophobic coating and its size.

If we consider this camera from the point of view of design, then the appearance adopted the features of its counterparts, but the characteristics and functionality have changed, as have the dimensions themselves.

The standard chamfered rectangular shape measures 108.6 x 66.5 x 32.3 mm. The screen, as in other models, protrudes by 1 mm. On the front side, on the left side, there is a small hump to make it easier to hold with your fingers, but it does not help. A small protrusion was also made under the thumb. The index finger rests comfortably on the trigger.

But in general, you can express a negative opinion about the convenience in the hand. Because holding the camera with one hand is completely inconvenient, it is about to pop out. This is due to the very small finger protrusion on the front and the overall short distance from the right edge of the EOS M to the lens. Often you have to hold the "mirrorless" with the second hand. It must also be remembered that the weight of this camera is approximately 500 grams. Another part of the hand (fingers) constantly rests on the screen, which does not allow you to normally see the focused picture for photography. In this regard, the rival Sony NEX-5 wins at times.

The Canon EOS M is made from magnesium alloy and comes in 4 colors: black (with a rough finish), gray or metallic (semi-gloss finish), white and red with glossy finishes.

The assembly is of excellent quality, all joints are perfect, there are no squeaks. The only drawback is the coating of the black metal plate, which is located on the end sides (right and left) - it was quickly scratched until a light color was exposed. Basically everything is fine.

I liked the metal holders that attach the strap. To remove the holders, it is necessary to turn the lever counterclockwise.

Canon EOS M control

On the front of the camera on the top right is a special red LED autofocus light that shines up to 3 meters. Also, just below the backlight for remote control is an infrared sensor, and even lower, in the center, there is a round button for attaching a lens or unlocking one worn.

On the reverse side, various connectors are very conveniently placed under a plastic cover: miniUSB A/V output, input (3.5 mm) for connecting an additional microphone, and miniHDMI output.

From above there are already familiar elements to all "canons":
  • standard holder for flash units and transmitters;
  • two stereo microphones;
  • focal plane mark;
  • a tiny hole in which the speaker is located;
  • dial for setting shooting modes (photo with manual settings or automatic, or video mode);
  • in the same place in the center of the disk is a button for activating the shutter (soft with two modes - pressing and half-pressing);
  • the button for turning the camera on and off is round and located at the level of the body;
  • camera status indicator (LED) that informs the photographer - green (the camera is ready to shoot), red (the camera is in processing or during shooting).
On the back side, where the display is located:
  1. In the upper right corner, there is a rounded raised button to turn on the video recording with a red mark.
  2. Below are three round buttons - "Menu", "View" and the bottom "Information".
  3. Between the three buttons is a selector with the ability to scroll it in different directions, as well as the ability to press:
    • up (select shooting mode);
    • right (setting exposure compensation or selecting an aperture setting);
    • down (delete);
    • to the left (AE/FE lock).

From the bottom, the EOS M has a tripod socket and, to the right, a cover under which are located: a slot for memory cards (SD, SDHC or SDXC "UHS-I"), a battery.

Canon EOS M - display

The LCD display on the Canon EOS M camera has a 3.0", it is a 3:2 rectangle - 64 by 43mm with a resolution of 1,040,000 pixels with a 100% coverage angle and a 170-degree viewing angle. IPS matrix type (Clear View II). The brightness level is set in the camera settings , the range from minimum to maximum possible brightness is wide, so that at maximum you can see the image in sunny weather.The touch screen allows you to set the image zoom - "Pinch-to-zoom" In the EOS M settings, you can set a special function to increase the sensitivity of the display sensor , he will be able to respond to the actions of your finger even in cloth gloves.

In general, we liked the display, its viewing angle, the sensitivity of the sensor area and the wide range of settings.

Canon EOS M battery

The camera has a lithium-ion (Li-Ion) removable battery with a small capacity - 875 mAh and 7.2 V; 6.5 Wh. The battery model in Canon EOS M is LP-E12. You will have to buy an original additional battery so that there are no troubles when taking pictures on a trip. It costs about 2,500 to 3,100 rubles. Expensive, but what can you do, photos of your life can cost even more.

With a fully charged battery, we were able to take about 200 photos, almost what the manufacturer guarantees - 200-230 photos. And if you record only video, then a full charge will last only 50-60 minutes.

In the EOS M settings, you can enable the "Power Saving" mode: automatically turn off the screen after 15 or 30 seconds, or after 1, 3, 5, 10, 30 minutes; turn off the camera completely after 30 seconds; turn on standby mode for 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes.

It takes 2 hours to fully charge the battery from a 220 W network, and charging via USB does not really occur.

Photo Canon EOS M

This camera uses an APS-C (Advanced Photo System type-C) CMOS sensor that has an overall size of 22.3mm by 14.9mm. There are only about 18.5 million pixels, but the effective number is within 18 million.

The KIT comes with an EF-M 18-55mm (f/3.5-5.6 IS STM) lens. Its weight is 210 g, and the volume is 60.9 by 61 mm, the filter diameter is 52 mm. This lens consists of 7 aperture blades, 11 groups and 13 elements. The minimum focusing distance is 250 mm.

The Canon EOS M has the following shooting modes: Intelligent (Auto), Manual and Manual Movie Exposure.

Photos can be taken in both JPEG and RAW format. In the JPEG photo mode, you can set continuous photo capture at a rate of 4.3 shots per second. With RAW, you can take no more than six shots per second. RAW photos have the CR2 extension (Canon has a new format), their average size ranges from 25-35 MB.

Maximum image resolution size:

  • JPEG 1:1: (L) 3456x3456;
  • JPEG 16:9: (L) 5184x2912;
  • JPEG 3:2: (L) 5184x3456;
  • JPEG 4:3: (L) 4608x3456;
  • RAW: (RAW) 5184x3456
Thumbnail examples:

I will say right away that when viewing 100% of the size of the photo, the quality is not super. See 100% pieces from the original photo:

Canon EOS M video

The maximum possible video resolution of the Canon EOS M is 1920 x 1080 pixels at 25-30 frames per second, or at a video resolution of 1280x720 - 50-60 frames per second. You can shoot one video with a maximum length of 30 minutes, and the maximum video file size is 4GB. Records in MOV format. For this camera recording format, you can put another minus, since this is one of the most inconvenient video formats.

When shooting a video, the finished file has the following parameters:

  • Format: MOV
  • Video resolution: 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
  • Video codec: AVC, 45 Mbps
  • Audio codec: PCM, 1536 kbps

To begin with, I want to say that the cost of the Canon EOS M Kit is about 30,000 rubles, and for the Body you will have to pay from 18,000 to 20,000 rubles. Now about whether this camera is worth the money.

You can note such positive reviews as: compact dimensions, simplicity and clarity in navigation, good quality of photos and videos, wide manual settings, high-quality display matrix and excellent sensor.

There are also enough minuses and they are no less important: poor design in terms of the convenience of holding the camera in your hand, autofocus is not very fast and not the most accurate, non-standard EF-M mount. Naturally, these parameters do not allow you to buy a Canon EOS M for such an inflated price.

For that kind of money, you can choose a camera of a similar class and with better parameters, such as Sony NEX-5 or NEX-6, Nikon J1 / J2 / V1 or Samsung NX1000. Site Conclusion: don't buy this camera.

If you really want a mirrorless compact camera that will work with all Canon M lenses, try the Canon EOS M or wait for something else.

Once upon a time, Canon was the last of the major manufacturers to introduce its mirrorless camera. The company had time to study the competition and release what was missing in the growing segment, but it did not succeed much.

The first EOS M 5 had positives, but performance and usability left a lot to be desired. At the moment, its release has been discontinued, and a replacement for the EOS M5 and EOS M6 has appeared on the market. The previous owners are advised to update the firmware to version 2.0.3.

All Canon EOS M cameras are easy to operate and have a large sensor that takes great photos even in low light. The highlight is Canon's new EF-M mount specifically for the EOS M. So far, only 22mm and 18-55mm lenses are available, however, the entire EF line of DSLRs, from standard zooms to super telephoto lenses, is supported.

This is a useful feature for Canon DSLR owners with a range of lenses. Please note that for them you will have to buy an EF-EOS M adapter for $ 200 (11,500 rubles). The EOS M has the same 1.06-inch 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor as the Canon EOS Rebel T4i DSLR, and the new camera is a stripped-down version of the old one.

Full HD (1920 × 1080) video recording at 30 frames per second is supported. The ISO value ranges from 100 to 12800, expandable to 25600 for photography. The 3-inch 1.04M-dot LCD touchscreen lets you scroll through and zoom in on your shots.

The design of the new cameras is solid, the build quality is high. The body is reminiscent of the Canon PowerShot, only thicker and heavier, but the weight doesn't matter once the lens is attached.

On the front of the Canon EOS M is a mount, finger grip, lens release button, self-timer LED and AF assist light. Behind the cover, on the left side, there is a microphone input, a mini HDMI output and a digital (USB) output.

The top has a built-in microphone, hot shoe, speaker, power key, and a shutter button with a mode switch around it. There is no built-in flash, you have to connect an external one.

Display and settings

On the back of the EOS M is a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, a video record/stop button, a play button, a menu button, an Info button, and a Quick Menu main dial with an Enter button in the center.

The screen, dial and function buttons are used to set the parameters. There is no viewfinder, which will be unusual for users of other digital SLRs.

Equipment

The Canon EOS M usually comes with a set of 22mm f/2 STM pancake lenses, which costs $250 ($14,500) if bought separately. Some stores sell a camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM - it costs $300 (17,300 rubles) separately.

Inside the box you will find a camera with 230 shots and 1.5 hours of video LP-E12 battery, charger, neck strap, USB cable and quick start guide. There are also 3 CDs with software, complete instructions and manuals on how to use the software.

Performance and image quality

Canon EOS M takes excellent quality pictures worthy of the EOS brand. In daylight, photos are crisp and accurate in color.

The kit with the 18-55mm lens doesn't have a great zoom range, but in most situations it won't be needed. The textured surface on the zoom and focus rings makes it easy to rotate them.

The Scene Intelligent Auto option works best only under ideal shooting conditions, otherwise it is better to use semi-automatic modes like Aperture Priority. The bright LCD display reacts according to the settings, so you can see how the finished photo will look.

In low light, the quality of the shooting is not greatly reduced. You can set the ISO value up to 25600, but above 6400 there is digital noise. Handheld Night Scene mode takes four consecutive photos and combines them into one bright and clear image. For the best night shots, you need a tripod or a flat, still surface.

Videos are smooth, with precise focus and good exposure. There is a built-in microphone for better sound quality, and an external microphone can be connected through the appropriate connector.

A dedicated red dot record button works when the camera is already in video mode. Autofocus with any lens is very slow - despite the high-speed CMOS AF promised by the manufacturer. Canon DSLR owners will be disappointed. If there is not enough light, it will take a long time to release the shutter.

Software in Canon EOS M

In the latest firmware update (2.0.3), the speed of autofocus has increased, although it is far from the level of modern mirrorless cameras. Most of the settings are made in the user interface on the touch screen. Changing the shooting mode, ISO level, or exposure compensation takes more time than if the camera had physical buttons and dials. The Canon EOS M constantly experiences delays when switching.

The Touch Shutter function allows you to focus on the desired area with a single tap on the screen. This is not always convenient, and if you touch the display during the shooting, you get a random shot.

The long lens outweighs the body of the EOS M, so the camera must be held firmly with both hands, making it difficult to use the LCD screen.

Outcome

Canon EOS M - although an updated camera, but despite the many predecessors, the company did not take into account the experience, so the device cannot compete with analogues from Nikon, Sony, Panasonic or Olympus.

Image quality is decent, and all EF lenses are supported, which is nice, but DSLR owners will be disappointed by the slowness, and compact camera owners by the high price of the EOS M.
